Reason for so much RAM slots on x79

I can't believe i haven't heard of this, but DID YOU KNOW that there is software that will allow you to take some of your ram and basically use it as a hard drive SSD, only instead of get some shitty reads and writes, it will out preform even the best SSD's by A LOT, like tens of times....

so now-a-days with affordable 4gb sticks you could have a max of 16gb of ram (24gb on 1366) which is not really enough to say allocate 12-15gb of your ram to this RAM disk, which you would need for some games. But NOW with 4gb sticks you can have 32gb ram, and least say you keep 8gb for ur computer and use 24 as a ram disk, bam you can put 2 games or some programs in there and the would be SUPER fast (no more loading screens, haha)

what do you think? it is as good as it sounds or have you heard of it and it doesn't work as simply as i thought?

Used to use them to cheat on disk benchmarks like old versions of PC Mark. They are a pain for day to day use. When your PC is shut off the data is lost, so you need to put the data back to ram disk. Usually the software will do this for you, but it takes time.

yea i was thinking that would be one of the major downfalls :S

you can have upto 128gb of ram in x79 systems

Yea, you have to buy the Ram I guess. But I suppose it depends on the quality of the ram, if you get the 1333 its really quite cheap...1866 quad makes it pricey. Not sure whether you could mix the ram speeds though and be able to isolate the slower ram for the ramdrive and leave the fast stuff for the OS.

Just had a look at one piece of software for doing this with. It seems that you can have an autosave feature, basically on shutdown the data can be saved as an image (assuming no bsod obviously) and automatically copied back across on system start up.

Beats me why game writers don't use ramdisks. You could trickle-full a ramdisk area whilst the user is messing about at the beginning of a game. The majority of x58 and onwards users have more than 4g in their pcs and usually never use than 2.5.

Not something game writers in 32bit would think about tho with their addressing boundaries. Having said that, you could probably use a form of bank switching to access another 32bit location. Hell this is getting too complicated for them.

With quad channel it will be worse. The majority, again, will do fine with 4x1g sticks - but you try and find some that are of quality speeds. So we'll have 8g+.... for what ? A professional will find use for it ofc.

I can remember using ramdisks on Amigas. Very handy for games and working.
