RAM Prices Dropping! WTH!?

Didn't know where else to put this, so I chose this section...

RAM IS FALLING FROM THE SKY!! Just kidding, but seriously, what's with the RAM prices for DDR2 dropping like crazy? I bought a G.Skill DDR2-800 1GB stick about 3 months ago for about $115, now the same stick is going for $55?!? And RAM prices in general are coming down a lot... is there something I should know about? Is DDR3 right around the corner? What gives??

TECH SUPPORRRRRRRRRRRRT!!!

DDR3 is getting closer and closer yes, P35 is creeping out slowly too support it and its looking like a good move.

can you mix say, a 2gb kit with another make 2gb kit, or is it best to stick to 2 kits of the same make/model.

Its best to stick with 2 sets of the same than start mixing, although I have done it before ;)

not looking to overclock, its just for my server. still a good idea?

well, i see what you mean about RAM prices dropping. Just found another matching kit just HERE £70, Bargain. SBS is gonna love having 4gb of ram.

^^ agreed but why? ddr high price and ddr2 lower, wtf, is there not a glitch with some of the ddr2 so the companies are trying to sell it so they can release the ew better stuff soon?

Because there isnt as much demand for DDR anymore so it costs companys more to make because they wont buy the components to make it in bulk.

Where as there is high demand for DDR2 so they can produce it fairly cheaply.

Thats my theory anyway

Actualy its right. Sadly though, Corsair XMS with LEDs (2x1gig) is 292 where as Corsair XMS2 pro (2x2gig) is 192  Makes me want an AM2 system.

Market forces.

I`ve always likened chip prices, when graphed, to a "U" shape - that`s shorter on the right than the left.

Starts off real high (get the most money off the peoples "who have to have it gd!!")

Price rolls down to a trough, with factors like stock build-ups and newer tech just around the corner. Right at it`s lowest point the new tech has it`s `start off of the "U" shape`.

Then it rises, usually not as high as the original pricing, but to cover the supplying of peoples who have to buy this form of tech cos of equip they have still requires it - and they`re upgrading in small steps to prolong existing setups.

A variable rollercoaster :)

U get blips around OS releases and other freak occurances. "Z0mgg-- Eff safe I need 2g to run this...".. people rush out to buy and so on. Standard "requirements" for a gaming pc moving from 1g->2g etc.

Since looking at Newegg again, I've found that HDD (hard drive) prices have fallen pretty drastically as well. ALMOST $1 TO 5 GB's! About a year ago or so, it was roughly $1 to 3GB's, and that was cause for a celebration. Both Samsung and Western Digital have 500GB HDD's for $120, and if that ain't cheap I'm Hillary 'The Socialist Queen' Clinton.

Man, its amazing how things change so fast in the pc world... I remember when I put my first pc together, got an ASUS 9800XT video card, was totally wowed. Then about 3-4 months later or something like that the X800's came out and beat it to death:mad: wth.

Which basically makes me give a bit of advice... don't buy on spur of the moment. If something is slated to come out that is a HUGE improvement (like the C2D or quads), think it over and wait. Second, a little patience goes an even longer way because prices drop and you can get good stuff for cheap. (read: DON'T BE LIKE ME AND GET BLEEDING EDGE!:fish: )

Meh, I`d never suggest buying just released stuff, gfxcards or OS especially.

I`m toying with the idea of putting together a b1tch of a pc, but I`m well past waiting for effective drivers and outrageous prices to come down. I`m coupling the idea with my vacation in November. I was gonna buy it all this April, but when I considered I could buy it all at half the price just by being in another country - that alone convinced me. Or I can double the spec with the saving, thinking that way I may just by a quad processor just for the hell of it.

Hell, I`ll play Total War til then if I have too :p lol

I can still remember £1 a meg for ram - that was considered cheap lol
