I have been looking at whether to get 4 more GBs of ram or a ssd, i would probably of chosen the the ssd but the max i can get atm is the 30gb OCZ Vertex one and im not sure whether its enough for a boot drive with win7 64bit

30gb will be enough for boot and a few small proggies like firfox and the likes. I have 2 64gb in raid 0 and out of 116gb formatted I still have 100GB left on my ssd I have stuff like well opsys of course firfox acrorat reader flash player (browser plugins basically) antivirus benching stuff monitoring stuff and games and large proggies are on my storage ( which isnt shabby at all either

) look at my sig lol so basically I'm saying if 30 is all ya can get its more than enough for win7

Okay Thanks

im only going to be using it for boot so i think it will be okay! plus ram is cheap also so i will get that later!

do you run a decent OC?? if so adding more ram keep in mind with oc's its better to do it with 2 sticks (or 3 if 1366) than it is to fill all the mem slots

I would try get a larger SSD at least 60GB. 30GB is to small.

The size of my windows folder alone is 20GB+ then once you start loading a few programs then those files use temp files then you take away your 2GB page file and then you get your programs putting data into your AppData folder it would be over 30GB also remember when you install a program it extracts the EXE into a temp folder on your C drive and most large programs are 100Mb to 4GB.

i would wait and get a bigger SSD.

lol why u running a page file one of the best tweaks for ssd performance is to disable it lol. as far as temp files those aren't worth worrying about as they delete easy enough. 30GB is more than adequate for opsys only use. Been using my ssd's for 2 months or so now and havent seen over 16GB of used space.

if you tweak it using the ssd tweaks as suggested then you'll be fine

Yer i'm running my i5 at stable 4.5 Ghz on stock volts so im gonna just go with the ssd and make sure i only use it for what i need ^^

you will see improvement with any ssd lol but the sata 3's lol you'll go HOLY SHITE!!!!!!!!!! why didnt I do this sooner

My apps (just the browsers really, but also EA Origin client (for Crysis

) and all the motherboard utilities, and all other hardware drivers/utilities, plus Windows, and a couple restore points, take up 19.7GB on my SSD. Then Crysis is like 11GB.

Best ways to free up space:

  • Delete hiberfil.sys
  • Shrink your page file (mine is 500MB with 8GB RAM), its default is like 8GB

Definitely SSD> RAM though, the difference in responsiveness is very noticeable.

On the same hardware, I've installed Windows on the HDD and SSD individually (as I ordered SSD later), and I can say hand on heart the SSD is definitely worth the money.

You want at least 60GB+ though, some SSDs will slow up as they fill up.

EDIT: Its 16.2GB used up by Windows + Program Files now, deleted shadow file copies and removed Service Pack Backup files.
