ram heat spreaders

While browsing the forums I noticed a lot of you guys have RAM heat spreaders (probably there by default, not 3rd party), are those things really worth it? I may be getting a 4gb PNY DDR2 kit soon that has them for $70 , or I can try and find another 2gb DDR2 Kingston stick that doesn't have one that is around $55 (same price that I bought the single ram stick I have now). the single ram stick I have right now is kind of weird since it's 1/2 the height of a normal stick of ram and a 3rd party heat spreader won't fit on it.

stupid question I know, but I had to ask. This is in USD btw.

yeah they are beneficial they help cool the ram a lot better and all high performance ram have them generally generic or value ram dont have them unless you put your own on them but personally i wouldnt bother messin about that when u can buy sets with them on them that are done properly

the ram i have also has the possibility of adding in watercooling to them there is just one downfall with them being so fat i can only use 2 sticks in 4 slots, but as most other ram with the 'standard' heatspreaders you will have no problem fitting ram in all your slots

and the ram u have sounds like its the small stuff thats used with mobo's where height is an issue, like in an itx m/b that doesnt use laptop ram

ok, by the sound of it I'm better off looking for a 2nd stick of the ram I already have. plus what am I going to do with the left over ram stick, I have nothing to use it in.

sell it on and use the money towards the new stuff mate, plus if you plan on overclockin and want to overclock the ram its much better to go with decent branded ram like crucial, corsair, ocz etc. as you will get much better performance out of them and its not advised to use unmatched pairs of ram as u might get performance problems

the current ram I have as from Kingston's value-ram series, to me it sounds like a cheap way of selling off reject ram sticks but it is what I could afford at the time.

yeah im not sure about how they go about with the value series if its just underperforming ram or specifically made, but as u said b4 yours is low profile ram so its a more specialised field and maybe heatspreaders arent worth puttin on them.

can you afford to completely replace you ram to some good stuff now? cause there is a lot to choose from but price with DDR2 atm is really bad its doubled in price over the past year cause of them starting to shut down manufacturing cause they want everyone to move over to DDR3

you might be able to get on some forums with classifieds in the US? now sure if thats where ur from im just presuming since u were using dollars are your currency and on there you should get good second hand prices, or try the dreaded ebay

yea, I'm from the US but ram prices here keep randomly changing. I can get the PNY 4gb kit for $70 at one place but at another store is $110. wtf is up with that? but since the ram I have seems to be low profile and probably isn't the best for gaming I may as well get the full sized ram for $15 more than the other single 2gb stick. plus the other stick is tricky to find since it keeps randomly disappearing and reappearing.

yeah prob not a lot of it gets made, im not sure how that PNY kit will be as ive not heard about it, ill go read up about it, also when you get the ram you will have to upgrade youe XP to XP x64, Vista x64 or 7 x64 as 32bit OS'd can only see 3GB ram and you would be wasting 1GB of the ram

can you give me an exact model for the ram?

yeah that ram looks like pretty decent stuff you should have no problem with that mate and for that price its cheap and thats great you pay that kinda money here easily for second hand 4gb kits, yeah windows 7 is great i have ultimate x64 and i cant see going back to any other windows now

yeah it looks like a good kit, but if you can find other kits out there that are from corsair, ocz and that go for them instead if the price difference isnt 2 much

I'm just going to get the PNY 4gb kit since it fits my budget and it seems much more reliable than the Kingston 2gb stick I have now.

ok, I'll see what the have in stock when I have a chance to go to my local Frys, there are two so finding it shouldn't be an issue.

yeah well let me know how you get on, how is that cpu have you tried to overclock it prob not had a big overclock if you have cause of the g31 chipset tho? cause i was thinkin about gettin one myself for my folding rig im building on the cheap
