rad advice

Want a CPU+GPU loop, as my 5970 is very loud under lead, so is the stock cooler on my Phenom. Have enough room for a 360 80mm thick rad in the front with push pull. Would that be enough or is it too much? Not looking to overclock, just want to silence it. Noticed that the backplate on the 5970 gets hot to the point where you can't hold your hand on it for more than 2 seconds, so I might have to make a sandwich waterblock for it. Also the heatsinks on my motherboard get quite hot, should I cool them too, or is it fine? I would also like to run CM Sickleflows on the rad, as I have 8 of them and I really like the LED's.

What case do you have?

There are better fans with LEDs to use on rads over the CM Sickleflows however.
Bitfenix Spectre Pros, Silverstone Air Penetrators, fair few Enermax fans and a Phobya's ranges too. Sickleflows will be alright - and obviously save you a fair bit of money if you already have 8, but you can probably do better, and get something a lot quieter too.

80mm though, you're looking at the Alphacool Monsta, but 60mm would be fine for your set up if you want to save a bit of money and get a UT60, or other 60mm thick rad.

I have an Aerocool Templarius Telum, it looks deceivingly small, but once you start fitting stuff inside, it's really not. I measured, an 80mm thick rad will fit in the front, with a second set of fans, without any cutting. Would I see any noticeable difference between the UT60 and the monsta? There's not really a big difference in price, just 13 quid. I thought I could get better fans, but since I already have 8 Sickleflows and after watching some reviews, they're really not that bad on rads.

They are pretty good on rads because they spin very fast. But obviously that creates a lot of noise. On the other hand, something like the Corsair SP fans would perform just as well, but be silent at the same time.
It's up to you. Performance wise, they'll be fine. But since you're doing this for silence, I'd have thought spending a little more on decent fans would be a good idea.

The UT60 and the Monsta are pretty close in performance really. On low fan speeds, the UT60 is a little better I think. But with high speed fans, especially in push/pull, the Monsta takes the lead marginally iirc. Still though, either will be more than enough for your set up, especially if you aren't overclocking, so it's up to you.

I personally have the UT60, with CPU and GPU, so similar kind of set up to yours, and my temps are perfectly fine - and that's with all my fans at 5v too.

A minor advantage of getting the UT60 would be if you do ever upgrade your
case, it'll be easier to find one that fits the 60mm thick as opposed to the 80mm - especially if you're considering any push/pull set up in the future.

I'd personally go with the 60mm and save the £13 as I don't think it will make a massive difference. But you may think differently. Either will be fine, however.

Looking at performance charts, the Sickleflows push a little more cfm and have roughly the same pressure as the SP120 performance editions. Though the SP120's are even faster than the Sickleflows. It's kind of hard to believe what the manufacturer says, for example the Sickleflows are NOT 19dBA at 12V, no way. They do push a decent amount of air at 5V though, so might work out to be just fine on a rad. Though I suppose pushing through a thicker rad would be in favor of the SP120's.

Everybody lies when it comes to rated fan specs. Measure noise from 100 meters away and of course it's gunna be an insanely small amount of noise.
There aren't really industry standards of how far away to measure fan noise from, or CFM for that matter, so you can't really compare on rated specs.

If you currently have the Sickleflows - it probably isn't worth changing them. You'll obviously have used them and know how they sound for you.
I've had 2 myself in the past, and I found them to be by far the loudest fans I've ever actually used - and when on a fan controller, they're a lot worse as the motors click and grind.

Temp wise however, you'll be fine with pretty much anything tbh. If you're happy with the noise at 5v - run it at that. You'll be alright with no overclocks easily.

whos performance charts are these? sickleflows have nowhere near the static
as a SP120any. they dont even break 1mm/h20. its a case fan and always has been.
was never delvoped as a pressure fan. the blademaster is a pressure fan, but
no LED. needing pressure for a radiator, bitfenix pro LED. there has been
at least three members complain of SF noise and performance.. sell the SF
or hate the temperatures..

Have you looked at the xspc rx360. Good for low rpm/high sp fans, cheaper as well. Either way its going to be a stretch for the loop to keep things cool with the gpu you have.

I was looking at charts from Corsair and CM websites, but never mind that, there's video on youtube of someone comparing SP120 performance editions with Sickleflows on a rad and the Sickleflows aren't far behind, while staying quieter. Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7xjUgasRiY

Just watched that vid. F*** me, what a joke. What the hell is that thing he has on his chin??? Almost as bad as that verge collection monitor he is using.

ok, so sickleflows are bad on a rad. Looking at Bitfenix Spectre Pro's now, just wondering, how good would they look with LED's fitted to the non led version, anyone got a photo?

to get the right fan.. it might cost..
have you looked into phoyba fans? i hear they have a strong flow and LED..
ive got some LEDs ordered to torture a corsair SP fan.. we will see..

not sure id go with phoyba fans thay are not as good as thay make out ive used six of them on my last build even a 7v i could still hear them if your not after looks or leds in the fans id try fractal design r2 fans thay are very quite thay dont have the same cfm but hell wen your useing a 60mm/80mm rad who needs a fan to wihp up a storm in your case
