r9 290/i7 2600

I bought a r9 290 for 300 euros last week (amezing deal). And wanted to play some minecraft again today with some friends. I noticed that the fps are really bad (40-70-sometimes peaks to 200 fps).

Finding it strange that a gpu this powerful had trouble with this game, I tryed it out with my old gpu (HD7870) and my brothers 280x. And I found no diffrence in the fps i was getting.

I find this strange since before i swapped my gpu i got around 200-300 fps.

I tryed all the fixes i could find online. And would like to know if any of you have an idea of what it could be.

System specs:

-Intelcore I7 2600 (non K)
-Corsair CX600 psu
-16gb corsair 1333 ram
-A msi motherboard (cant rember its name its about 3 years old)
-Intel ssd (again, cant rember the name)
-A random slow 1000 gb harddrive for my movies
-Corsair h60 wich i had laying around

Nothing is getting overheadet at all.

Please exuse me for my bad grammer, English is not my native languag and i have dislexia.

Any help would be a big help.

Minecraft is down to being horribly threaded as it runs on java it only use's a single cpu thread the video card dosent make much differnce.

Yeah.....

Minecraft + High end GPU = no improvements.
Minecraft + High end CPU = Happy days.
Minecraft is very CPU intensive all in part to the poor nature of Java and it's hopeless non existent multi core optimisation.

600 watt should be enough. And surely should as nothing is overclocked. I dit try optifine, no improofment.

But thanks for the replies. I might look into a cpu upgrade. But the strange thing is, that before i gor the 290 i had no problem running it.

600w is enough especially with no overclocks, I doubt your CPU or GPU are the problem and it is either driver related or something not playing right.

I know there were issues with the 14.1 drivers with Minecraft, not sure about 14.2 and 14.3 though. Try rolling back to 13.12 drivers which are the last WHQL non beta and see if that sorts it out.

will try that right now.

--------------

I feel kind of stupid, but i cant find the 13.12 driver. I can only find the 13.9
I can vind other downloads but they dont seem legit. Could you help me out a bit?

Don't bother, if you had listened to what other people have said it minecraft's fault and not yours... especially with AMD cards. It's minecraft, not worth the hassle.

Sometimes the version of the JRE installed can be the fault, also make sure you have the 64-bit version installed.

Eh, my pc is starting to slow down. Frames in any game are slowly but surely getting alot lower. I have no idea what i dit but this is happening.

Where did you get your 290 from?
Also how long have you had your HDDs and which one do you use to put games on?

Do you have a reference 290? It could be throttling, the temps might be normal but performance may still drop because what 290s (reference models) do is lower clock speed to keep temps down.
Use MSI afterburner to monitor your GPU clock to see if it is throttling or not.

Also use DDU to uninstal your drivers in safe mode, it will completely remove any trace of old drivers that may be causing issues. When you have done that reinstall the drivers again.

Its an asus r9 290 direct cu2. And I will look into that program later this week. I got an exam tomorrow :/

Im getting tired of these problems :S

The Asus has (or rather can have) throttling problems due to Asus being a bit lazy and you didn't answer my question about where you got it (funny enough, it could be why) so I'm going to guess used off ebay?
Check temperatures when running a game and let us know what it is.

I doubt the DCU2 would be throttling but you never know, usually only the ref 290s throttle. Might just be drivers though, try DDU and then reinstall drivers. You need to monitor you clocks with AB to be sure though.
Also make sure you disable the integrated graphics on your CPU in your motherboard BIOS.

If you still have probs i'd try reinstalling Windows, sometimes it is the only thing that fixes things if all else fails.

EDIT:
Also make sure the BIOS switch is pushed to the right, if it is to the left it is in quiet mode.
The way the DCU2 works though, it shouldn't really affect performance.

In quiet mode (BIOS switch to the left) it keeps the fan speed as low as possible without the temps going over ~85*c and in performance mode (the BIOS switch to the right) it makes allows the fans to spin faster to keep the card cooler.

Ref cards actually lower the clock speed whereas the DCU2 just lowers or increases the fan speed withput lowering the clockspeed.

They do if the cooler isn't on properly/faulty. I researched them when my friend wanted a new gpu and the toxic hadn't been announced :P. Its a problem that can happen. Mainly down to Asus and how they've done the cooler/quality control.

Well, yeah if the cool isn't on properly or is faulty :)

The DCU2 doesn't lower the clock speed based on heat like the ref 290s though. It just increases or lowers the fan speed. Although if it was overheating as in temps over 90*c then it would throttle due to excessive heat. If temps are within 80-90*c though it shouldn't be throttling :)

They can (and do) hit 90c and above on quiet mode from what I've read. Also, throttling can be caused by a lack of power (its not the highest quality PSU and if its as old as the rig...)

I guess we can only speculate until OP gives info about temperatures. Minecraft is minecraft (and quite why people still play it is beyond me ;) )so thats nothing to bother about, its just the supposed degradation of FPS in other games is more of a worry.
