Quiet psu

Hi all,

My graphics card died recently and ive been trying to decide on a replacement. I borrowed my m8s gtx 580 to see how much my old system would hold it back (planning to uprade to IB next year) and my PSU sounded like it was preparing to take my rig to the moon!

Its a 4 year old tagan force II 800 W and apparently it doesnt like running anywhere near its maximum load.

Ive heard alot of good things about the corsair PSUs but also read alot of good stuff about the Enermax ones too. Does anyone have any experience with the noise levels produced by the 800-1000 W models?

When i upgrade im hoping to watercool cpu & gpu(s) so a quiet PSU would be nice seeing as the rest of the system will be pretty quiet too hopefully.
 
I don't have any experience with Corsair or Enermax PSU's but I can recommend the BeQuiet range of PSU's. I am talking about the 80+ gold standard ones. I'm using a 750W BeQuiet PSU and it is extremely quiet at load and that is with a factory overclocked 580. I'm pretty sure your system will not be using anywhere near the 800W capacity of the PSU and it may just be that there are not enough AMPS on the 12v rail.
 
I risk to be called a Seasonic fanboy, but the X series of PSUs is extremely good, although not "cheap". Can't go wrong with Enermax too. Not really sure about Corsair and BeQuiet had some issues with reliability in the past.

I've heard good things about Seasonic, although I've never used one. Same with Enermax.

Seasonic, Enermax and Corsair seem to be the go-to PSU's.
 
The OCZ ZT & Corsair HX are very quiet PSU's. BeQuiet's are another very good option for low noise.
 
I love my current Lepa PSU, which is identical to the Enermax MODU 87+ (as it a co-company of Enermax). The Lepa version of the PSU is around £40 less too, wins on all fronts. It is very quiet, the fan doesn't kick in until it needs to, around 300W worth of usage and spins for around 30 seconds after you switch your rig off to ensure everything is cool, which will prolong its life-span. I can't comment on many others, I've used a Corsair PSU (which is in my current rig and when it gets up to around 80% load it gets loud, very loud. The quality of the Lepa/Enermax PSU is awesome, its solid (it feels like a brick), the modular cables are epic as is the 80+ Gold rating.
 
I didnt think it would be using near 800 W, I guess old age is setting in. Either that or it just runs roasting hot and has to put the fans to max. I think I will want a new one by the time I upgrade the rest of the components anyway, if only to calm my nerves, connecting new bits to an old PSU would worry me

Enermax PSUs do sound good to me, they are the most expensive but mabey its worth it if its going to be well made with quality components.

Still going by what you are all saying if I end up with a Corsair, Enermax, BeQuiet or Seasonic im probably not going to go too far wrong. Will see if I can find some video review to have a listen.

Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, be quiet! or Silverstone has many good quality PSUs to choose from. It also depends how much you're willing to spend on a good PSU, in your case a 800 - 850W PSU will be great for anything like a single to dual GTX 580s in a system. I'd definitely recommend the Seasonic X gold rated PSUs. They're extremely well built and has outstanding performance; not to mention they are also one of the quietest PSUs around.

I will have a read of those reviews and see what I can find.

I recon its between Seasonic and Enermax now, I dont mind spending a bit on a good one. It would seem that power supplies dont get stupid expensive like most other components so may as well put up the extra for peace of mind if nothing else. The extra efficiency might even pay for its self in a few years

Also keep in mind that you will most likely be able to use a good PSU for a long time. I'd still use my old Seasonic if it had cable management.

Majority of the Corsair PSU range are just rebadged Seasonic units.
 
It would be interesting to know which one of the manufactures help to make the gold rated PSUs offered by Corsair currently.

Corsair AX850W - audible - fan doesn't spin in Idle when up to 30% load.

I think that any Seasonic, Corsair (HX/AX) or XFX (new series) will be quiet.

Never tried BeQuiet.
 
Thanks for the all the input guys. Its really interesting to hear that the corsairs are rebrands. I wonder if Seasonic are holding back anything special for their own models to give them an advantage of corsair.
 
The newer Seasonic PSUs have a really good fan as well. The fan controller unit turns off the fan until a certain power load before the fan is turned on again.
