Can I take a fishing rod onto a train? It will be a 3-4 hour journey.

It's in a bag, and it's brand new and not stinky. It's about 2metres long.

probably, i take my fire staff and unicycle on all the time and haven't had an issue yet.

Just keep it as out of the way as possible. If someone complains, stay polite (its funny how often the guard will take your side if you aren't shouting about people taking up all the space with their stuff) and move it if possible.

I'd suggest putting it above the seats, it should fit fine on the rack and be out of the way
 
try it, but you might have to spend the journey in the end of the carrage, in the section where the doors are, ....

but thats the fun of first great western HST's, you can stick your head out of the window :p
