Hi OC3D!

I have a very very close friend and he's going to sell me his z77x up7 motherboard at less than 1/3 of its original price. Should I take it and buy an i7-3770k? Should I go for a 2nd hand processor or a brand new one? Will there be a good chance of getting a better retail unit (in terms of overclocking) if I buy a bnew Ivy Bridge processor or is it just not worth it?

Or should I upgrade to a bnew Haswell processor and buy a bnew z87x OC X board instead?

My current system:
CPU: Intel q9550 core2quad
MB: Asus P5G41T-M LX3
VC: Asus DCUII GTX 570

Thanks in advance!^_^

What are you going to do with it if you overclock you will probably be better with ivy over haswell if you just want to put it in and it works then go haswell also what do you want to spend work those two out then go from there

If he's selling the motherboard for a reasonable price, go with it and grab an IvyBridge processor. If your primary objective is to game, you could consider the 3570k.

Ivy gets my vote as well, since your friend is selling that mobo and haswell doesnt really offer anything new over the ivy's you might as well buy a 3570k or 3770k.

Excalabur50: Yes I'm planning to overclock it. Would like to practice and learn more about overclocking on a much updated platform.

yassarikhan786: Thanks, I'll take the i5 3570k into consideration. Primary purpose is to game and overclock. Would it be more future proof if I go with the i7 3770k?

Dark NighT: Thanks! I don't wanna let my friend down too. :) Actually I was the one who persuaded him to sell it to me since he already has a new haswell mobo and an i7 4770k.

TheRamJam: Thanks! No plans on gpu upgrade just yet. This upgrade plan is already a pain to my wallet.

NeverBackDown: Thanks man! Made me more eager to get Ivy.

Ok, that settles it. Ivy bridge it is. Will buy my friends motherboard and save up for an Ivy B. processor.

Thank you so much for responding. :)

I voted for Haswell. I dont like to buy 2nd hand stuff as brand spankin' new gear is usually not that much more.

Haswell is the faster processor and pretty much the same price as an Ivy chip. Id just cough up the extra for a brand new Z87 motherboard and then get a 4670K to drop on it and have a faster setup. Yeah Haswell is only 10% faster than Ivy Bridge but 10% is still 10% and since the chips cost virtually the same thing, I dont see why you wouldnt go with them. Yeah the Ivy motherboard is cheaper but its also used. The motherboard is the foundation of your entire rig and I wouldnt want a used one going in mine.

its getting crazy! I don't know what to choose :(

I'm fully confident that my friend's unit is in good condition and if ever something bad happens to it I'll let him handle the RMA stuff and I do know where he lives. The processor though is the tricky part. The lowest priced 2nd hand i7 3770k I found was only 20% cheaper than brand new. And a brand new Ivy was only about $25 cheaper than Haswell in my place.

If you have confidence in your mate's board and the cpu's are cheaper just save the dollars and buy them after all a few dollars saved is still a few dollars saved and hang onto the money saved then add to it later to buy a gpu or ssd or whatever else it is that you need

How much are we talking about with your friends motherboard? If its a $250 motherboard that youre getting for like $125 then you should probably go for it. If its a $150 board youre getting for $120, just cough up the extra $30 and get a brand spankin' new Z87 board. Like I said, Haswell is 10% or more faster than Ivy bridge yet costs about the same. No reason to rob yourself of 10% performance just to save $20-30 on a used motherboard.

Just go with haswell as there's hardly anything in the price between it and ivy, plus you'll get the benefits of the new z88 chipset.

I just bought an msi z87 g65 gaming mobo off the back of TTL's review to plug my 4670k and 770 into it. Busting to retire my old 1366 rig and get it built and gaming on Sat :)

Brand new price of a z77x up7 is quoted at $390 and he was selling it like $120 to me. Though Haswell offers alot of new goodies (great mem overclocking, 10% better performance), its kinda hard to let a good deal go. If I was to go with Haswell, the true equivalent motherboard would really be a gb z87x oc force not the stripped version z87x oc. It's frustrating because money is kind of a factor to me. sigh*

Thanks, That the most economical way to go. I did some researching too of what I'm going to miss if I don't get haswell. Memory overclocking is superb on z87 platform. sigh*

Dicehunter If you haven't got either then you should go with Haswell as it's the newer tech.

Thanks for the feedback. Noted.

Icekube Just go with haswell as there's hardly anything in the price between it and ivy, plus you'll get the benefits of the new z88 chipset.

Awesome set up man. Pretty damn good gaming motherboard. I want my pc to be orange that's why I prefer gigabyte's oc boards for my build. :p

ShaunB-91 Get Haswell. New release.

Thanks bro.

I'm not sure how fast of memory you want , but according to the Gigabyte website you can use up to DDR3-2800mhz on the UP7. I sounds like your friend is giving you a good deal on the board , I would just go for it.
