I am thinking of making my first gaming pc. And was reading threads on i7 950 and read something about i7 2600k. And read that it was the same price. I wanted to know which one is better as in performance, and price. I am not one of the over clockers. I dont over clock at all

i am too scared to mess up or decrease the life of the product. So i dont care which one over clocks the most. I just want to know which one would be good just for performace and price. With boxing day sale coming up just wanted to know if i should wait for the i7 2600k or buy the i7 950.

Ok, The i7 950 uses the lga 1366 socket. The i7 2600k is lga 1155 which has less pins.

I myself is going to buy a i7 950 in february and sofar it looks awsome.

Ok but remember, the i7 950 will have more expensive motherboards and ram, and the i7 2600k is there in the mid range class, thats abit less expensive.

Oh I forgot, what are you looking into? A top of the line gaming pc or a mid range pc? They will both handle games very well, but the 950 will do it abit better

Anyways i am just looking for a gaming build for about 1000$ on boxing day. So far i am in the budget, the parts i wants are at the price i want. Or should expect a price drop on the i7 950 OR what? Or just buy the i7 950 at 280$ CAD or can i get it cheapers

I would say in order to be fair and compare them you will have to wait till Sandy Bridge is released and the reviews are up.

But remember of the other features that one CPU has over another one. 1155 will have the UEFI bios, i know it's a bit gimmicky, but hey it is going to pretty cool. However, 1366 supports triple channel ram which 1155 won't. 1155 is going to accept higher memory clocks without overclocking, which 1366 doesn't. The list goes on and on. So you will have to decide on that once Sandy Bridge is out. Right now, for my needs, I am going to go with a 950, but you will to consider what you are using your computer for.

Also if you are overclocking I would suggest a 950, since on Sandy Bridge overclocking is supposed to be almost limited to the multiplier and not the frequency, but these are all rumors, so again if you can't decide, wait for reviews on it.

Hi.

Because of that budget you'll do well with summin cheaper than the i7 950 rig and overclock, (some motherboards have safe automatic overclocking system options), even the fastest CPU's could be OC'd for all-round high-end smooth gaming. you'd get good results for current gaming with the cheaper OC'd solution, like an ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA ROG motherboard/Something with a good auto overclocking system in the 'soon to be released' 1155 range, because like BladeTitan wrote, i7 950/1366 is expensive, and your scared of overclocking. Get clued up on the necessary CPU cooler and PSU etc for OC'ing and you'll be laughing. And bag yourself a high end graphics card. Though will the 1155 stuff be at a premium price on release? You can wait. I dunno

Stuff is expensive at the UK. I know America is cheaper, though I don't know what these ideas will cost you.

Todays games run well on 4 CPU core's. The hyperthreading i7's should help for future games, though the CPU technology will be a bit out-dated by then and it might suffer, alot. The 1155 i5 @3.summin Ghz with a fair price tag should interest you.

The rig's you got in mind, with a top graphics card costs over $1000 in the UK. Smuggle a few containers full of Nvidia/Intel hardware and I'll send you a thank you card

If $1000 isn't enough you could save more money and build better for Crysis 2 releases in March.

Thanks

I have also seen people having these chips today. Its probably shops trying to get money at xmas time, so they selling it

Yes, but imho I wouldn't buy anything before the NDA is lifted and they are officially launched. And we don't our TTL to be put into prison so we'll just have to wait for those review untill January. At least that gives something to be excited about.

I was also going to buy the i7 950 but decided to wait. According to the many articles I read the Sandy Bridge chipset will get you more for your money.

The best thing is to wait and see. Maybe OC3D can tell as the answer once it is released, and now only a few weeks away its worth the wait.

Mainboard: Asus X58 Sabretooth

RAM: You will need triple channel RAM......Mushkin Radioactive will go well with the Sabretooth board.
