Question to PS3 owners

Just bought my PS3 in Japan and now I want to register to access the playstation network. My question is can I register on a region different from the region I actually live in?

I live in Japan but I can't read japanese enough to reg for the JP network, so I want to reg as US or FR . Will it work and I will be able to play online, get contents, buy at the playstation store or will I be screwed if I don't reg as a user in Japan.

Any help will be appreciated as it is apparently impossible to change or modify your profile after you registered.
