Question on multiple monitors setups

The way I understand Crossfire is:

The 6850 supports 3 monitors. If I crossfire 2 cards togetherI can use 6 monitors.

The 6990 supports 6 monitors, so if I had 2 in crossfire Icould run 12 monitors but I'd go deaf.

I'm 90% sure I got this part right but please correct me if I'mwrong.

Really, its SLI I find confusing.

I've seen people run 3 monitors off the GTX 590, but if I had2 in SLI could I run 6 monitors at once?

And what about the GTX 570 and 580, can you run more than 2monitors off a single card? And could I run more in SLI? Example, couldI run 6 monitors if I had 3 GTX 580 in Tri-SLI?

Thanks for your help and sorry about the n00b questions but this was keeping me up last night.

the back of a 6990 only has 4x mini-HDMI ports and a single DVI-I

i have one

it can only run 5 monitors

EDIT: is FIVE enough for you?

Tbh, I could never afford to do it but I'm just really curious to know if its possible to get 6 monitors working as one on a NVIDIA SLI setup.

Btw, I know the 6990 only has 5 connectors on the back but it really does support 6 monitors. I $%&^ thee not. Even Linus didn't know that one.

I am wondering what SLI has to do with a monitor setup ?!

i have a GTX260 and a GTX460 (yes and a GTX470) and i can run 6 monitors if i want to , or am i just not getting the question

Sorry if I confused matters. What I'm asking is really this... You know how AMD has eyefinity so you can use 6 monitors as one? Well can you do that with NVIDIA cards running in SLI? Hope this makes more sense.

please read the foot note:

AMD Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard aspect ratios, which is required for panning across multiple displays. To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native DisplayPort™ connectors, and/or DisplayPort™ compliant active adapters to convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort™ or Mini-DisplayPort™ connector(s), are required. Support for six simultaneous displays may require complementary products compatible with DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport. Maximum number of configured displays may vary - check with your component or system manufacturer for specific model capabilities and supported technologies. SLS (“Single Large Surface”) functionality requires an identical display resolution on all configured displays.

Aaa yes that´s a good elaboration

i will have to try al tho that would need a whole overhauling of my setup(s)

could try this in the weekend if you really want me to

these extra "connectors" are supposed to be an extra £150 each. they haven't even been released yet (they are in beta stages)

multi-stream support will not run 2x 1080 res monitors

I didn't say it did. I just said that it supports 6 monitors because that what it says on the AMD specification page.

But anyway, I'm sorry if my previous post seemed ott, I promise I was trying to be playful.

If your saying that 5 monitors is the most it can run properly then I accept that and have no reason to argue with you.

lol

i just do not want anyone spending hundreds on crossfiring 2 of these in expectation of the capabilities (of-the-bat) of a 12x monitor "true full 1080p res" set-up

it aint gonna happen (YET)

Hell, that's the sort of crap I'd do just for the sake of it if I could

If you would try it out and take pics then that would be ace! But please don't go an f-up your rigs for some n00b asking stupid questions on a forum about stuff he couldn't afford to do anyway. I just get curious about this sorta stuff.

I absolutely agree. They'll just have to make do with the 10 monitors

and go blind as well as deaf.

After release of the original 5870 they made a 6 HDMI port 5870 card. They'll probably do that with the 6990. I looked a dug's link and it didn't show a cards specs

Ok, if anyone's confused about what I'm asking hopefully this will help. Also these vids are kinda cool.

Ok I know you can run 3 monitors off the GTX 590 as one like this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pOnI4jRQsY&feature=player_embedded

But if you had 2 running in SLI could you do this... (that's a more boring video these days)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzGtxlaPQqY

Also as a side note, could it be done with 3 GTX 580 in Tri-SLI?

But I'm interested in the cards being run in SLI so this sorta thing doesn't count as even though its still only one picture, the cards are actually running individually. (I know there actually the radeon cards and not NVIDIA, it was just the best example I could find)

Cheers all. Hope you at least find the videos entertaining.
