Question about indexing

I'm not sure if im using that term correctly, and i hope this is in an appropriate section.

I'm running 3 drives on my pc- a SSD, and two HDDs. while i've stored as much as i can on the HDD, theres certain things that default to the C drive locations. on a previous install which i didnt do, it was set up so that all user files were stored on D drive rather than C (D being a 2tb sata, C being the SSD) which was done by what appeared to be a simple shortcut in the place of my user profile.
I've been neglecting this for months but i just had a low disc space warning. i managed to free up 20gb of unnessasary things, or just move them but theres 35gb of files that i cant change the index of otherwise things will break since they directly refer to it.

the main two folders using up space is my music and my documents, while ive stored as much as i can on D, some things make their way onto C. my question is can i make a copy of these folders on my D or E drive and place a shortcut pointing to them in the place, or is there more to it?

Videos and pictures were transferred a long time ago since nothing points to them its a easy switch.

you should be able to move your documents without any issues at all as well as your music. Whatever program you use that looks for these files will have to be told where to look. Also by default you should be also be able to point that program to those folders and have it save any future files to those newly created folders on your storage drives.

yep that sure worked a charm.

I created shortcuts to the new locations, copied the index they referred to and created shortcuts in the users folder.

Some programs dont care about the change. but most of them have started crying to me. lovely.

If you want you could also move your entire user directory i.e save games, Music, Pics, Videos etc... to another drive, I do this to save space on my SSD.

If you want I'll type out the instructions for you :)

You need to go into your "personal folder" as windows refers to it. It lives at the top of the start menu with your username if enabled. It can also be accessed via the drop down list at the far left of the address bar (to the left of "Computer" in your screenshot) Once in here you can right click on each folder in turn, select properties and then you can set the location. (it should ask about moving the current stuff across to the new location) A few folders like appdata may not have a location tab under properties and cannot be moved via this method.

You can also use the mklink command using command prompt for folders that are not supposed to be moveable.

the only folders using significant amounts of data are documents and music, everything else is already on D:
kei, helpful write up but i couldnt follow.
dicehunter i would appreciate if you instructed me. might be an idea to discuss it over steam chat

Go here.

Once in your personal folder, open properties for the folder you wish to move and click on the location tab. Click Move and select the folder you wish to move it to.
