Quad or new motherboard

Hi guys!

Currently I have a intel dp35dp, E6550 2.3ghz, 4gb ddr2 800, gtx460 1gb...

Thats my box...

Its ok for work, but I cant play starcraft....I had a gt8800, I thought that was the problem so I bought the gtx460....So i bought more ram... 2gb extras... still no luck... So the only thing left is the processor. So here is the question, what would be best to buy a quad processor or to buy a new motherboard and overcloak my current processor? Am I asking too much? Or should I wait 1 year and buy a new box

Thanks for all!

whats the budget?

I had an ad from tigerdirect for quad-core kit under $200 US, maybe it would be upgrade? Didn't look cos I really can't stand not being able to buy when shopping/looking.

Well an amd 4 cores could be, processor + motherboard $200.

My hdd is a 300gb 7200rpm where my os's are and 1tb 7200 where my data/games are, could that be my real problem?

woah 300 bucks i think you could get something good with that maybe a quadcore some ddr3 and new mobo time to go on newegg brb

EDIT: you could get a phenom ii x6 4gb ddr3 and a 870A mobo for about 300 bucks... maybe a bit more

So gaming is going to be the most demanding thing its gonna have to do? If so, more than a i5 or phenom x4 isn't needed. The key to lots of fps in games from cpu side is four cores (no hypertheading) and a high frequenty. So you need a good overclocker for motherboard. If 300 is the buget you should wait a little while and go for a 2500k i5 and a gigabyte ud3/ud5... At the moment sandybridge is not avalable, but in april they return to the market (correct me if i'm wrong on that date). If you cant wait i should go for a socket 1156 i5... Or you could also try to find a second hand 775 quad core q6600 or better, at least the ram you just bought isn't for nothing.

Cheers!

Hmmm so the only way to play is buying an i5. The problem with that is that is like buying a new box, motherboard, ram, cpu. At least I want to use my ram.

So I wont feel any difference if a buy a core 2 quad, I mean between that and my current core 2 duo E6550? I dont want to waste my money buying this new cpu and feel the same between my 8800gt and my gtx460

Thanks guys for all your comments!

new ram is worth it and you can get 4GB/1600mhz for only 50 bucks

i say wait for a sandy bridge mobo refresh by the time they come out your budget might be higher and the quad cores *might* be cheaper

theyll last you longer and give you better performance especially with some ddr3 ram

either get a q6600 cheap of craigs list or fleabay or save more and get a is 2500k setup.

maybe do both as a q66 would breath new life into your current system now and give you a year or 2 more life out of it before you need a real upgrade.

Exactly! Thats what im looking for, an upgrade to make my box lasta at least 2 more years, the last upgrade until I turn it into a new linux server (my current linux server pentium III needs to rest).

So do you think a quad would be a good upgrade or i wont feel the difference? Thanks for all guys

my last cpu upgrade was from an e8200 to this q9550 and tbh it doesnt do much faster than it did but it can do much more at once. now thats because most things still dont fully use all 4 cores and they both hit about the same clock speed (4ghz+) but its much harder to bog this cpu down when i could bog the e82 down with just a couple of things.

like i said if you can get a q66 cheap its worth it but i wouldn't spend a lot on this socket now as it is dead, current uk price for a q9650 is £260 and for that you can get a i7 2600 and its a no brainer which to get if your spending that kinda money, hell for a little bit more than that 9650 you could get a ud3p 4gb of ram and a i5 2500k.

avoid the q8x00 and the 9000s that dont end in 50 and you should get a good oc too.

Thanks for all guys....

I was looking for a q6600,I could find just second hand...$130-$150. But with my current motherboard I wont be able to overclock, so a new motherboard would be $70-$100 extras...Its quite a lot of money for a second hand box..... So I was wondering what if I build an amd quad core, I guess I will expend more or less the same amount of money even buying ram.

What do you think about that? Would it be worth it? Would I feel the difference between my current Intel E6550 and a amd x4?

BTW I know amd works with ati, would it work just fine with my nvidia card? (Sorry I dont use amd's since my 586 xD)

yes .....yes and yes ur gtx460 will work on an AMD board you just cant sli if you get one that has amd chipsets. And I dont recommend going with and AMD with nforce chipset.
