Quad memory issue P9X79

(about to go looking for answers, but I thought I'd throw it in here in case it's something someone has seen)

Buddy has got an ASUS P9X79 (I advised Gigabyte, but hey-ho), the memory, 8x4g Corsair (CMP16GX3M4X1866C9 Model ID) - shows up as 24g.

In the crazy bios menus, under SPD, it shows 2 of the sticks as "abnormal". Move them around and you get different sticks, and sometimes the same sticks showing as "abnormal".

Bios has been updated to 0802 (from 0605), which was the usual ASUS traumatic experience, but it's now the latest one. Didn't solve anything.

Under normal circumstances, I'd be saying as with most mobos, the voltage when you fill all memory slots needs to be upped - but.. that's a really old trick - and should you need to do this sort of thing these days ? Not overclocking or anything right now.

Any suggestions ? (I've checked he's got all the correct powers connected etc.)

.. off to Corsair to have a looksee ..

THe Rampage IV extreme reccomends that if you are running 64GB of RAM or just any RAM at high speed you need to set both the DIMM voltage and VTT voltage a bit higher. Additionally if he can set the DIMM current capability a bit higher (say 120%) (haven't got the manual handy so can't remember the correct name).

Apart from that, see if those lanes are dodgy, and check for any bent pins. On the old X58s it was normally a memory speed issue (the board deciding to speed the memory up for no reason), a voltage issue, or bent pins.

Actually narrowed it down to "incompatible" sticks within the same batch (which is shoddy imo).

The one kit of 4, 2 of the sticks will behave themselves as long as the other isn't present. After a spell of pita swapping and changing.

RMA.

Definately using all the blue slots, not stick/blank/stick/blank? Worth double checking this.

Sticks should go mirror image each side of the socket, not matching.

Only problem with that is there's 8 sticks for 8 slots. But I can get your point if you mean kit-wise. Shouldn't need to do that tho imo, it's poor if you do. This is pre-oc or anything.

Doing the build with 4x4g until the rma comes back. I suggested going through Scan, but have a bad feeling he's going through Corsair.

Corsair are fantastic at rmas in my experience - but if you've only just bought the stuff, I go back to the retailer.

I should've spotted that.

I'd try each set of 4 in the blue slots, then the grey, but you've probably done that. Would certainly rule out a board problem.
