Can someone tell me how big the difference between a set of ram at 6-9-7 compared with 6-8-6 is going to be

I'v been looking for a 6gb kit of 1600mhz 6-8-6 ram for lil over 6 months now i'v finally admited defeat and i can find a set at 6-9-7 so how massive is the difference going to be should i just go with that set or look at different brands with 6-8-6 kits(really like the look of the mushkin)

You wouldn't notice the difference at all just go with whatever is cheapest.

If you're a gamer ram makes practically no difference whatsoever, you might see 1-2 fps difference going from 1600 to 2000MHz if you're lucky. Most of the time you'll see no difference.

Synthetic benchmarks will show in improvement when you shorten timings or adjust speed, but for the most part in real world stuff, there's not a lot between sets.

Just pick a good manufacturer: Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Mushkin - any of those companies make good ram and have good RMA.

And then adjust which you go for according to price and if you want it to be aesthetic, colour as well.

other than gaming it's going to be rendering 2d animations(coursework) and some photoshop stuff timings have just as big an effect as in gaming there to I'm guessing?

There won't be much of a noticable difference, because the CAS Latency is the same on both sticks. (that's the first timing). The RAS to CAS Delay (2nd timing) doesn't matter too much in real world performance, because that operation is done during a previous other step so the time that this operation takes is lost either way. The RAS Precharge is good on both aswell. So yea in real world scenarios (gaming and the other stuff you mentioned) there won't be a noticable difference between the two. Buy whichever set you like most, considering the price, looks, warranty etc.

you will see a difference in synthetic benchmarks but in realworld use you wouldnt no.

what the tigher cas, more expensive ram will get you is better binned chips which will oc higher, now is that worth the cost? thats down to you.
