But that's not the point, it's eligible and inefficient

Saying pwned now associates you with a certain social group (e.g. gamers)

Most of the efficiencies in typing (tbh, qft etc) are just that: efficiencies which is what human speech is driven towards. As forums are casual informal places the speech tends to follow these efficiencies

Some people do go OTT, but that's generally the rule

but tbh, wtf, etc mean something and are short form (used in sms etc to save characters)

I don't know what qft is tho?

pwnage isn't shorter than ownage and I normally relate it to kid gamers (the 13yr olds who take gaming seriously and cheat and/or type in abuse when they die, normally typing in n00b or noob) who probably also continue to use l33tsp34k like we used to in 1996. The only reason they do it is to try to fit in.

Exactly they're trying to fit themselves into a social group, thus you just proved my hypothesis. You don't want to be seen as part of that group so you don't say it

They'll learn in time when to use it and not to, and when they're fed up of being branded gamers they'll stop.

I don't really like the way society tries to make stereotypical groups (which are inaccurate, as accurate as using the word 'normal')

If everyone was the same the world would be boring.

I notice you say 'they' ? :)

Apple pwn MS...again

Yep I'm still a big gamer, just not a young or too annoying one I hope ;)

And yep people try to conform to social sterotypes which are for the most part innaccurate

But I won't go into all that as Linguistics is more my domain :)

pwn will be in the dictionary along with; btw, afk, joo, tbh, qft, etc in so many years time coz they blend themselves into popular speak.

lmao it`s crazy.

Just don`t say freakin carebears !?!?!?!!!??!

in answer to the original question, soem guy typed own wrong in WoW and then tried to pull it off like he meant it, it caught on.

as for the argument on stereotypes, its all disillusioned people trying to be cantakarous (can never spell that word right)

hmm pwn is older than WoW m8y, are u sure u`r thinking cantancerous ? as in bad tempered ?

I personally find all the little geeky words rather annoying, like pwnage, ownage, FTW, FTL Noob etc etc.

In my experience, most people that i've encountered using words such as pwned are only doing it as a p*ss-take to the rapidly decreasing group of people who actually think it's still 'elite'.

Take for example the OC3D clan. We are of mixed ages, but I can confidently say that any use of 'leet-speak' is only ever used for a quick giggle.

People who say it and mean it are often quickly taunted in my experience.

Gotta agree with this on most mmos.

In alot of cases it`s used when a player is acting up then noobishly gets themselves killed - there will be a good handful of "pwned" shouts in their direction, as a pish take.

Most of the time people say pwned cause its normal. I dont particularly say pwned or owned in a different sense. Just w/e comes out. Usualy the younger croud that think they have their game on say pwned like it means more than owned. I just say either cause talk is talk. It all means the same. At MY LAN parties if any of it is serious that particular person is kicked out. I typicaly say owned more than pwned though. I dont exactly care where they came from lol.

Nah, i know what you edited outa my post. I was apologizen for it. I dont say it, but its been said at some of my LANs before. Kinda goofy. I DO say owned though, not pwned. Actualy, my whole family says owned too, and my gf. Kinda rubbed off of me onto them cause once something happens to somebody (Or see something on the news, somebody burns somebody w/e) i say owned.

Normal?

I think I heard someone on TS say 'pooned' the other night which was amusing :D

Yea like, its the normal thing to say now. Sorta like OWNED. If you woulda gone back like 10 years and said owned people would look at you funny. Now, its just normal.
