Hello all!

So, I recently bought myself a lovely shiny new thermaltake shaman cooler. Absolute beast! (both in terms of performance and size.)

As it is, my 768mb palit gtx 460 is clocked at 800mhz core. I've read on a couple of forums that with aftermarket cooling and a bit of good fortune, it's possible to crank it up to anywhere approaching 900mhz. I'm a little doubtful of said claims, as this would put it in the same ballpark as a gtx 470 in terms of raw performance(as far as I can tell, could be a miscalculation on my part).

Anyway, here are my current limitations as I see them:

1. Palit aren't exactly known for good Fabrication quality. In fact, the reason the shaman came into the picture was because one of my fan blades ripped off of the standard cooler...whilst at 75% fan speed. This was 6 months after purchase. I was not, as they say, a happy little bunny! I can only class myself as fortunate that it wasn't spinning even higher at the time. is my 800 max stable to do with generally low quality parts? Would appreciate some input from your lovely collective spongy grey matter on that one.

2. Core current appears to be locked. However, I'm no tech master and frankly, my knowledge of overclocking is still somewhere in 2006 due to well, laziness on my part. Is there any way to adjust current control through say, a bios patch or some form of 3rd party software? ( I was told that MSI afterburner might help, but unsurprisingly, control was "greyed out" when I fired it up.

Has anyone here got past the 800/825 range on a palit 768mb card? I see plenty for the 1gb version, although that appears to be a revised design, so perhaps it's not fair to compare.

Any input would be much appreciated, as I HAVE noticed a major improvement in FPS, especially in newer titles like the power sucking metro 2033 and call of pripyat.

I suppose the other obvious question is, if there IS some kind of workaround, especially with current control, is it worth the risk? At the risk of seeming timid and boring, I've gotten oddly attached to my freakish little non-reference Frankenstein's monster , and I'd feel like a total dolt if I killed the poor thing trying to gain a few frames per second.

Hope this finds you all well, and thanks in advance for feedback

Let me know if there's any screens/info that could be helpful in providing a solution, I'm sure I've missed something obvious as regards that point.

Cheers!

I have a gigabyte 1gb version, and with the stock cooling i have had mine running at 998Mhz stable XD the performance increase was incredible, outperforming my friends gtx 570 in 3dmark11

although I have stepped it down to 950Mhz for everyday use.

As you say, the voltage area of afterburner is greyed out when you start, but go into the settings and you will find an option to unlock voltage control - on my card I have the voltage slider at max which i think is about 1.6V (not at home atm) hovever I know my result is affected by the cherry picked gpu and high quality components on the super overclocked series that I have.

All i need to do now is get another, watercool them to crack 1Ghz (the current world record is with my exact card is around 1.25Ghz), then i will be pushing the gtx 560 sli/gtx 580 performance

The best advise to give you is to fiddle around abit., no two gpus are the same, so what someone else's maximum is isn't nessasarily your maximum

THANK YOU!

I can't believed I managed to miss the "settings" button. currently rubbing @ 900Mhz core, stable. Card is idling @ 30c* according to afterburner. I assume that the highest slider position for voltage is the max "safe" setting right?

I owe you a beer or beverage/substance of your choice, a thousand thank yous good fellow!

Mines a non-reference Palit so I doubt I'll get the same awesome levels you achieved, but it's a massive improvement from where it was. Only had to push the current to 1 volt so far, things are looking good

Again, thanks, you've helped me overcome a major hurdle

No problem, always happy to help XD The gtx 460's respond fantastically to overclocks, the fps boost can be massive! Enjoy overclocking

dude 998 ? ive got the same card, 1.087v max but i can't get it fully stable past 915, What memory clock do u use ? i got 2150

just gave it a go, went up to 1.127 ghz with mem at 1800 but my bench scores are best at 915/2150

That's what I found as well. the sweet spot for mine is about 950Mhz any higher and I get artefacts and lower scores on benchmarks. I am currently looking for a waterblock for it XD I cannot find one anywhere to fit

If it's of any use to you guys, I'm using a thermaltake Shaman myself. Pretty chunky, but it's very quiet for air cooling and I'm getting 29C* Idle and 46-50@ load according to afterburner. That's on Ass-creed-2 though, which is hardly a hardware pusher. However other reviewers on overclocks have reported much the same thing in terms of general benchmarks, so it seems you really CAN get high clocks + low temps without breaking the bank.

Honestly? I'd say these cards really don't need Watercooling unless you're trying to break some kind of record. The kind of performance increase you get in games from overclocking on what is, in my case, mid range air cooling is, as has been said, astounding. My 3d rating on even the very dubious windows performance rating went from 7.4 to a 7.6

(not that THAT means anything, lol.)

You guys think nvidia realised how highly these cards could clock? I can only assume they hoped to rely on consumer ignorance or something :S

Thanks again for the help by the way guys, My GTAIV icehancer mod installation says thank you!

i had a pair of asus tops.......(the blue versions!!!) those lil' basterds could hit 965.......

sniff sniff....

i loved those cards....
