Project: Playstation 1 PC

Dude, I think you may have just voided your warranty!

Seriously ambitious project, have every faith you'll be successful (as you do seem to have a plan and an idea of how to get there).

Will be keeping a close eye on this one.

You'll all be pleased to hear, the DVD drive is ordered!

Along with another PS1 to USB converter (This is the third one now, hope i don't break it!)

Also, I'm currently bidding on two DualShock (original) controllers, so hopefully ill get them.

The mouse is here too, but i haven't posted about it, so it'll be a bumper update!

Well, you be pleased to hear, the controllers and the DVD drive are here!

And what an update i have for you all..

Firstly, i'd just like to point out that i have ordered the wrong type of converter (i ordered the memory card converter) so ill send it back and get the one that i actually want, so that can come in another update

Anyway, on with the pictures!

This is all of the bits that ive received, although my camera angle is a bit shoddy.

Controller 2, (Controller 1 is in bits) Note, Its controller 2 because it is missing the rubber bits on the analog sticks.

The DVD drive, pre demolished.

Top of the drive, its quite a sleek and cute product really

Controller 1, ready to be cleaned, (In its current demolished stage)..

The DVD drive plugged into my desktop, just to check it works.

What i was looking for, the little peice of plastic that makes it distinguish between the lid beind down and not, just thought i'd try it (With nearly slicing my hand with the disk..) This DVD drive will be much easier than i thought!

IMG_8080.jpg

The drive not spinning, showing that my posh-screwdriver theory works! (Note the amazing ITV series 'Ultimate Force' in the drive!)

IMG_8082.jpg

Anyway, ill take it apart!

IMG_8089.jpg

With the rubber pads removed, im unscrewing it..

IMG_8092.jpg

Back cover off, The actual Disk drive unit is very small, i think i could use it in a Mini-ITX version!

IMG_8094.jpg

The unit separated from the plastic, just showing how thin it is!

IMG_8099.jpg

The plastic leftovers, really dont know why i took this.

IMG_8100.jpg

I did try and get a picture of the actual unit running without the plastic casing, but as i am not vishnu, and i dont have 6 arms, i couldnt get a picture.

Ill post back soon, with what ive come up with so far in getting it fitted into the PlayStation!

Okay then, so i finally got round to putting the DVD drive into the PlayStation!

Again, i forgot to take any pictures when i was doing it..

Anyway, so i got my dremel out, and cut out parts of where the original CD drive was, i had a little trouble getting the actual drive in, because it had be level.

So after a lot of dremelling and gluing, i have finally got it in, and it works!

Here it is, without flash:

With flash:

Here's the underneath,

IMG_8171.jpg

Note the drilled hole on the first two pictures, that is where the sensor is for making the disk run, ill put a peice of metal or plastic on the lid of the drive to get it to work when the lid is down..

Oh, i have also realised that i still havent taken a picture of the mouse, so here it is!

And next to the keyboard:

Ill be back (in the words of darth vader)

thats a brilliant project...just wondering, why didnt you do blu-ray? surely that pc could handle it...or would it have been too much?

just a thought for future upgradeability, or will it be the ps2 version that will be big enough to have enough space for it and for a more powerful pc to power it....inside a ps2, it wouldnt even need to be a micro itx pc...

In the editor use insert media and just paste the link to the youtube page to embed the video.

This has come along very nicely btw, you got everything together so much quicker than I thought would've been possible when I first saw the thread.

Ha that's a cool ass rig

I want one, I'm tempted to do something similar myself

Great work on the DVD drive as well
