Project Log - Project Sebranco

So, after a year or so of planning/saving ive finally ordered my parts that should be delivered tomorrow. Parts list and reasons for purchase can be seen below!

Case - NZXT h440
Not into space ship style cases, nice simple minimal design was what I wanted. Was going to get the define R4 then I saw this. No brainer really!

CPU - i5-4690k
mainly for performance to price ratio. An i7 build would have caused bigger arguments with the missus when she asked how much it all cost!

CPU Cooler - NZXT Kraken x61
There was no bloody way I was hanging a massive air cooler off the mobo. Got this as I like the rgb logo, slim radiator profile and tests/reviews are mainly positive. Slight concern over people reporting the pump noise at low rpm but we'll see how it goes.

Motherboard - Asus sabertooth mark s
Difficult decision to get this. Yes I probably could have got a board with more features for the price but I had to stay true to my principle of aesthetics leading the way with this build. Since opening it up I'm glad I've got it, it's a work of art the White PCB is very nice and it certainly has an exclusivity factor(if only seen 2 builds using it!)

RAM - avexir 8x2gb sabranco edition 2400mhz

Originally I planned on 2x4gb vengeance LP in White but then I saw these and thought got to have them regardless of price fortunately they were on sale £120 - bargain! 16gb fast look amazing and have leds that pulse! Then the price went upto £140 as i delayed my purchase for 1day too long. Fortunately over clockers refunded me shipping so I tip my hat to them.

Storage

SSD - Samsung 250gb 840evo
Put my OS on it, looks nice job done
HDD - Seagate barracuda 2tb
Won't be storing much on this so think this is adequate.

GPU - Galax GTX970 hall of fame edition
I decided on a 970 from the start then it was a case of finding the right one. Endless nights watching/reading reviews of the Strix/g1 gaming then this comes aslong wow amazing it looks great! Had to spend a bit more to keep aesthetics same but it's well worth it

PSU - super flower leadex 750v in White.
Now this was a headache. I'd decided on a corsair rm650. Found a reason not to like it. Decided on an EVGA Supernova. Same result. Ok last one Xfx xtr edition. Meh found this its White with good reviews. want to get full custom White braided cables eventually but extensions will go for now. hopefully the 750w should give me 90% efficiency at 50% load. Which is nice.

Monitor - dell u2414
Thin bezel nice design not tested much just a little go on WoT on my laptop but initial thoughts are can't wait to get another on the dell dual monitor stand coz that looks good too!

OS Windows 8.1
Don't like it suppose ill get used to it and apparently things run well on it. Bit annoying spending money on things you can get for free.meh.
Erm what else?
Got a free evixir 'gaming' mouse mat. Didn't want or ask for it it's black so no use to me. What is a gaming mousemat anyway! Came in a nice tube that's about it.

TL/DR

Bought some White pc parts to look nice in the corner of my room.

So my question is as a 1st time builder what are the pit-falls and problems i may encounter?!

Thanks

Hi rawdatamatt,

that's a very nice parts list you have there mate, in all honesty there are a few issues you could have during your first build, but nothing you can't avoid by putting in the research to familiarise yourself with the parts and take your time with the build...

don't rush it, plan out how things will go in before placement and route cabling with tidy in mind aswell **VERY IMPORTANT HERE** :-)

regards,
Rob

Thanks for your reply mate.

I've spent some considerable time researching parts, watching videos etc. but I'm sure there'll be some things that I've missed!

Got the kit today so I'll be building over the weekend then hopefully getting some pictures up.

Oh and as an engineer I deal with cables on a daily basis therefore resulting in a touch of OCD when it comes to cable management!

You're very welcome, I look forward to seeing the build!

You seem to have it covered to be honest mate, one thing I have noticed is the 8pin pcie extension, only 1 is listed but it's a 2 8 pin card, did you order 2?

I've only recently caught the cable OCD bug myself lol

Ye I got 2 but I missed out the 12v eatx cable (doh!) also only got 1 I/o extension when it looks like I need 3/4. Noob mistake brought on by over clockers sales guy.

One thing that has annoyed me is the monitor has just dropped from £180 which is what I paid to £130 although it does say it's discontinued so don't think I could have got it at that price just a marketing ploy by aria me thinks!

Any hoo got my parts home and started to take some photos.

On first impressions the gpu looks immense can't wait to get it built and fired up!

Haha we've all been there mate, get the sales spiel, get distracted and end up with either something u don't need or something missing from your shopping list!

Yeah that GPU is great, similar performance to the 780 (i have the evga superclocked edition) so you will have a lot of fun with that

Gutted about the monitor pricing, but timing purchases can be a minefield sometimes...when I bought my last card (asus 280x) it came down by £60 a month later! Just one of the risks, but that machine will be epic mate!!

Little hint - post the spec list above dude - most people wont click that link "if he cant post it I wont read it" ;)

Hi rawdatamatt,

so, how did it go? is the card too heavy? i had that issue with my 680 a few years ago, just brought my PCIe cables from above to suspend it, seemed to do the trick..

Rob

Hi mate.

Powered it up briefly last night. Everything came on which was a relief!

Think I'll have to try bring the pcie cables for the gpu from the top as u suggested as the sag is painful to look at.

Cable management at the back is more difficult than I envisioned as there isn't much room, the pre installed cables were quite a mess and the extensions don't help.

Just need to instal OS and drivers now and should be good to go hopefully!

Project Sebranco Update w/ Pix! 9/2/15

So it built. Its a work in progress but heres where im upto.

Got some horrible GPU sag that needs sorting and the gpu cables need some work but all in good time :)

Hey mate

Did you try the cables from the top method? Pulled right from the back and will help the sag...be careful not to damage cables doing it...

If you think the cable management is hard in that case you should try mine (corsair Spec-01)...

Made up it all went well, most importantly that you're happy with it! I'd love to see it all sorted, as I'm sure the rest of the guys on here would too

Rob.

I have read that the sag on the HOF 980 is one of the worst which is a shame because I love that card so much.

It's a major issue that surely they spotted in testing, the sag is caused by the cooler weighing too much for the PCB, why not throw a custom backplate on there in manufacturing?

Off topic comment: Warchild that speed test result makes me feel so jealous haha mine is a snail compared to that 😳

They may not see sag that much. They may use test benches for cards so motherboards are lying on their back meaning no sag on GPUs.

Also GPUs dont often sag instantly like that but gradually sink.

Yeah true, they should do the testing in conditions like that of their customer base really...unfortunately not the case...

Bright side is at least the saggy cards perform as well!
