Project "House burnt, need a new PC" :D

Hey Guys. As the title suggests I had a house fire. Two rooms were completely burnt and the upper two floors are badly smoke damaged. Everyone in the house got out, including our dogs and cats. My brother, being the lazy sod he is, was sleeping at the time, and woke up in smoke.

Anyway, the inside of my computer is caked with soot, which likes to corrode metal quite nicely. It was in a rough case for a few reasons, and was a case I had sanded down and did some test painting. I hadn't done this on the upper inner parts, and this area has rusted nicely (pics to come). Who knows what it has done to the motherboard etc.

So hopefully I will be getting some money to replace it, among other things. Plus I have some extra money to put towards it. I'm not completely up to speed on current hardware, so I was looking for some advice on what I should buy.

I am hoping for about £1k for the PC itself, depending on how much the insurance company gives me.

I was thinking about an i7. Before they were on the market I saw that benchmark revealed they were awesome. Are they worth it? My motherboard beforehand was about £150, so a cheap X58 board wouldn't be much of a step up price wise. Triple channel DDR3 seems pretty cheap now also. I like to overclock, and I heard that the cheapest i7 can be pushed past 4Ghz, which sounds awesome. How well will this push on a cheap board?

So i7 or Q8/Q9 Series?

GPU wise, I was thinking GTX275.

Case, either a TJ07, the smaller new TJ07 style case or a custom rat-look (rusty) case. This would involve dumping a sanded down case in salty water, drying it and applying some lacquer.

I am also aware of the release of DX11 sometime, and core i5 (worse or better than i7?). I probably won't get this money for some time, so I can wait if it would be a better idea.

So, what would you guys suggest? In return, pics of burnt things. Also I might try the rust case mod.

Glad every1's alright, that's the main thing.

Freakin house fire ffs!

Erm pc.. u reckon a £1000.. worlds ur oyster, do u wc ?

Sorry to hear about the house fire mate.

For 1k british I doubt you will be able to have a tj07 encased i7 rig. The Q9 series isn't a lot cheaper though, so to be honest I'd go for x58 / i7. Will have to shop around to see if you can meet your budget. I'm sure the insurance can give you some more if you say the casemod was very valuable :)

The first i5 benchmarks indicates it's just below the i7 iirc, but those aren't too trustworthy yet. I'd say just go for an i7 unless you really can't stretch your budget enough.

GTX275 is not a bad choice, might want to take a look at the ATi 4870 though, it's dropping to around 100 quid at the moment, but that depends on the time at which you want to buy your hardware. GPU prizes seem to be dropping at the moment.

I like the idea of a rustmod, should also save you some money if you take a pretty cheap case do to it on. Looking forward to pics of that if you're going to do it :)

And of the housefire pics of course.

Okay, so i7 it is. I do love the TJ07, but I would have to have the inside sprayed black to really love it :p. I might try the rust mod before I make the pc, then make a decision. I was looking at the 4870X2 (tad more expensive) in custom pc, and seems that it is actually a beasty card. I have never had an ATI card before however, so It would be a bit odd for me.

Also, I thought most cases were Aluminium? And aluminium does not rust. I wonder why this case rusted? This also means I need to find a cheap steal ATX case. Anyone know of any?

I guess your previous case was made of steel then :) Aluminium can corrode iirc (not too sure), but would need more than a bit of moist and air like steel.

I think most cheap atx cases are made of steel and plastic. The problem is finding one that hasn't got a plastic front panel but a steel one. Oh btw: SECC is rolled steel, that's usually the used material.

Front seems to be 2.5mm aluminium though. Will have to think of something for that. When practicing remember not to let it corrode too much as it also affects the structural integrity of the case if you go too far. You don't want your case to collapse when someone accidentally hits it xD
