Heya peeps,

Its time to scrap my old gaming pc and build a new one, I have spent some time putting together a list of components and would like your input before I spend a bundle on them...

Here we go... :)
...
Corsair 800D full tower case
Corsair 1200w PSU
Corsair H100
Asus Extreme IV Rampage Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 1866 RAM 32GB
Corsair GS 240GB SSD
Segate 3TB 7200 HDD X2
Intel i7 Extreme Edition 3960X
EVGA Geforce 690
Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium 5.1
2x 140mm Noctua Fans
5x 120mm Noctua Fans

Any advice on this build would be greatly appreciated.... :)

That is HUGE overkill for a gaming rig. Stick with socket 1155, go with an i5 3570K, MSI Z77 GD55/65, 8GB's of RAM @ 1600MHz (32GB's is ridiculous), and something like a GTX 670 as a GPU. A 550W would do nicely, so a Be Quiet P10 550W would fit the bill nicely, or a Corsair AX650 etc...

Also (this is 100% my opinion, so if you don't agree that's fine) i think Noctua fans are overrated considering their price. I have Bitfenix Spectre Pro's as case fans running on 7V resistors and Corsair SP120 Quiet Editions on 12V for my H100 and it's a silent setup, keeps my rig very cool too. Noctua fans would cost a lot more and you wouldn't get more performance tbh, plus their 140mm fans are loud.

I personlaly dont like the SF based ssd's, there is just to manny problems with the controller.
and the 3930k performes just the same as the 3960x

And since you are planning the rive, i would recomend you get 2 670 with 4gb of vram, rather than a 690

about soundcard i would take a look at the asus xonar phoebus.

I allso think that the corsair fans would look much bether in your rig than the noctua fans.

thx for the response bud, I agree it's over kill but I have the disposable cash to outlay and I want to treat myself, so my question is this - are the specs looking good?

The real question is, do you really need to spend all that extra cash for, well, no reason. You're gonna see no improvements in gaming from running that rig over the one i posted above (apart from the 690 which is still overkill for gaming on 1 screen)

What would you recommend regaring SSD's?

Having a look at the Asus soundcard but I have had the iterations from Soundblaster so a little worried about swopping.

I agree that the fans would look better colour wise but surely the Noctua are better with regards to pushing air through the case..?

Thx bud :p

Will look over those specs and give it some thought...

Case - Personal Choice but would say mid tower as not water cooling
i5 3570k
MSI GD55/65
8GB ram
128/256GB SSD
HDD of your choice
AX650
EVGA 670 FTW (x2 if you really really wanna spend money)
H100 but remember make sure the case is compatible
Corsair AF/SF120 your choice if you want Air flow or not x 2 for H100 and maybe 2 more for case depending on case

Ignore the sound card pretty pointless on motherboards now days unless your a music boffin

I have 2 Crucial m4, 1 in my craptop, and one in my main system, I've allso used on in a build reasently for my frien. It is dead stable and performes superb, and to that price tag its hard to beat ;)

The corsair fans are superb ;) I'm verry happy with mine, it allso looks like tom is happy with them aswell

More food for thought... :)

Just to throw it out there, the 800D isn't brilliant for air cooling, you'd be much better of with a raven/fortress or a switch 810, even lian li if you want to spend some money and get something really unique :D

I'm unsure what your setup but if even if you have the money it's complete overkill and you'll see almost no benefit to spending less so maybe you should upgrade your monitor/s to 120Hz etc and upgrade your peripherals (Mouse/Keyboard/Headset) if they need upgrading but I assume since you already have a gaming rig you may already be sorted in the peripherals side of things.

will be upgrading those as well, just didn't want to bore the community to what they were :)

I have read the 800D isn't great for air cooling but I bought it anyway with the idea of water cooling it at a later stage, they say hindsight is foresight so lets wait and see... :)

I'd also recommend that you get a Z77 rig instead of X79, and then invest the money you've saved in a water cooling loop. This way you get a powerful gaming rig that is also very quiet and looks awesome.
For the soundcard, I'd much rather get a Asus Xonar D2X than a Asus R.O.G. Xonar Phoebus

What are the advantages of Z77 over Z79?

You mean Z77 over X79, this is the same as 1155 and 2011 or 3570k/3770k and 3930k/3960X, Z77 is just a more mainstream platform and therefore much cheaper than the enthusiast platform X79.
You only need x79 when you do a lot of video/3d rendering, for gaming there's no difference in performance

Guys, if i had the money to treat myself i would be getting the best, there might be a tiny performance difference - but why not get the best?
