Problem with ssd/os

Hey guys

first off sorry if this is in the wrong section but it kinda covers a few areas.

Right I started having an issue lately with my rig. This started the other day with my ssd showing less space available than what it should be. My ssd jumped from 12gb free space to 6gb despite me not installing anything onto it. I watched my ssd over a period of a couple of hours and it went from 6.6 to 5.7 in about 5 hours.

Next was when I restarted my pc the splash screen for my motherboard wouldnt show and the windows logo wouldnt appear either. I have a black screen until the password section to enter windows.

Now today the password section took 4-5 times longer to show up.

What could be causing this?

I have done a full virus scan which came up with nothing. I havnt installed anything recently other than the new f1 game but that was done via steam and the 12gb free space was after the install of the game.

Any thoughts? could my ssd be on the way out?

The ssd in question is a corsair force gt 120gb and is about 4 months old.

Any help would be appreciated guys.

Thanks

Right I installed that program and I have been able to free up loads of space. I had programs installed on my ssd that can be installed on my hdd and some programs I forgot to delete were still there so I have freed up some space and now have 30gb free which is nice.

The paging file I did swap to my hdd after reading about it on here a while back.

Now the main programs on my ssd are the os, steam and a few games and autocad, revit and photoshop.

I still do not know why the memory would change so dramatically as it did. I have gotten back about 2gb of space that vanished after a system restart. Also the splash screens not showing is still happening for both the os and motherboard splash screen.

Any idea what could be causing that?

Right so I restarted my pc a few times trying to get into the bios by hitting the del key and the system would just give me a black screen. So I had a route around the back and found a monitor cable for my second monitor which I use every now and then. I unpluged it and away it went. All splash screens showing up again.

I have had my pc like this for over a month now and its only just started acting up the other day which was really weird. I still havnt found out what was causing the sdd to fill up but it seems to be holding stable now and I have freed up some space so it should be good to go. I will keep an eye on it however and if it starts filling up randomly again I will get back to you guys.

Thanks for the help.

You said you have steam, does it open on its own? It may have updated something?

Some of the steam updates are huge.

steam was open yes but I never restarted it for any update and my games must be manually updated. This all started happening after I installed f1 2012. Since my last post my ssd has lost another 1.2gb of space randomly.

This is getting quite annoying. Would steam really update that much and with that large updates that regularly? I only have 4 steam games on my ssd the rest are on my hdd which is not fluctuating in capacity at all.

Double check the pagefile/virtual memory to be sure it was correctly moved. That seems like the most likely explanation. You're best bet is to screenshot what you see on windirstat and then screenshot it again when the space fluctuates to see if you can see a difference anywhere.

Right I did both and since my last post I have lost over 2 gb of space according to windows but according to windirstat I have only gained 200mb which was a steam update. So either windows is reading it wrong or windirstat cant see all the files or something weird.

Any ideas?

I don't know what else it could be. Have you had any windows updates lately?

Not that I know of no. I am gonna uninstall some programs that might potentially be causing it and reinstall them. If all else fails I will do a fresh install over the weekend and see if that works.
