Primarily A Games Build - Thoughts

No part is a nailed on certainty so I'm open to options :)

This is to replace Desktop 1 (Q66000 build). The aim is for it to play 1080p 60fps (equal or better than my PS4).

It will just be playing games, watching lots of youtube videos, streaming videos on Plex from my server and very seldom video editing. Thoughts?

Future Upgrades
  • M.2 Drive
  • Maybe Jump to an i7 if needed
  • Full custom water cooling loop
  • 4K Monitor or Ultrawide monitor to replace my ageing LG E2250V's
  • Maybe a better motherboard?
  • Better card as time goes on

most 290X waterblocks will fit matey just check by using EK'S configurator although I can't get the one I want for my Vapor X :cussing:

If I put them into Crossfire would the power supply then be enough?. Was tempted by the Nano because of its efficiency. May have to do some reading up of 390Xs

I saw a review a cuple of weeks ago and it sead thay where pulling 800w's from the wall with 390x cf with a i7 5960X (all oc'ed) so you will be needing something beefer

Yeah I'm reading they can be quite meaty!.
Is a 980 more power efficient or should I hold for Fury Nano

390x and 980 are basically identical in performance but the 980 is more efficient. But down to which you want? Well if you plan on 4k like you said, 390x wins over the 980. More vram and doesn't take as much a hit to performance like the 980 will. It's also cheaper so you can upgrade the PSU with the money you would have spent on 980's and still have enough left. Nano is supposed to launch in August, this month, according the CEO of AMD. Nano has no launch date yet, but it's rumored to be a Fiji core but cut down to about the Hawaii specifications. Meaning it'll be about the same performance but slightly better due to the architectural improvements and HBM technology along with drastically better power efficiency.

So I've bit the bullet and bought 5820K in the Aria sales at £275 delivered.

The Fractal Case would offer substantially better upgrades in the future (watercooling loop?, Crossfire X) but the Corsair would save space but I'm worried about the temps of the in such a confined space.

The machine's primary use will still be games (playing, recording, streaming) and the odd video work on it too so i don't think a watercooling loop or crossfire X/SLI would really help.

Any thoughts?...Also the thought of a X99 machine in such a small case does sound cool haha.

I agree that such a compact 2011 rig would be very cool, so I'd go for the 380T. The temps might be slightly higher, but as both the cpu and gpu are watercooled, I really don't think it will be an issue, you might have to experiment a bit to find out which rad positioned where yields the best temps.
Adding a second gpu later isn't really worth it imo, unless you just wait a few weeks for the next paycheck. You're usually better off just getting a new more powerful gpu.

EDIT: I'd step the psu down to a 650w unit

The GPU wouldn't be watercooled. It would be the air cooled fury. I don't know whether a Fury X would manage to fit in that?..

Having such a small 2011 rig really really interests me but I'm worried about potential temps of both the GPU and CPU..I'd imagine I'd have to do some serious serious cable managing (something which ain't my speciality lol..)

Ou sorry, missed that, but an aircooled graphics cards should work well too, as it can draw in cold air directly through the sidepanels. A Fury X should also fit, not sure if you could mount both rads in the front or if you'd have to put one at the back.
I wouldn't worry too much about temps, the case is very open, so you can take in cool air to cool the components and have an exhaust fan at the back

I figure out of all the Fiji chips currently, the R9 Fury Sapphire at £420 is best value...Of course I could give myself extra room by whacking an R9 Nano in there which is much more tempting and then maybe put a H100i instead of a H80i...Just worried about Thermal Throttle and everything like that.

It's a shame you have zero choice with Mini ITX X99 haha...

EDIT:

I can either put a Mini ITX in this 380T or I can put in an EVGA Micro 2 (USB Type C support too!) with a Fractal Node 804.

You could probably fit the Fury X AIO and a 240 in the front. It would be a tight fit though

Done some extensive research into this..According to some forums, you can't put a 240 rad on the side and 120m at the front..the 120 would have to be at the back and that is a little tricky too from what I've read.

I think If I go down the 380T route its going to be an Kracken X31 and a Fury X (Can fit both so why not right?)

I have noticed there is a small Silverstone SG13 case knocking about..Now that would be the definition of mini but I'd have to put something like a R9 Nano in.
