Edit:
The major change from the 8800 to the 8900 is the move from a 90nm process to the new 80nm process and the change from GDDR3 to GDDR4.
This change squeezes an extra 125MHz from the 8900GTX GPU over the 8800GTX and a further 400MHz on the MEM clock.
This results in the 8900GTX 700/2200 (GPU/MEM) against the 8800GTX 575/1800 (GPU/MEM).
The 8900GTX release forces a price drop in the 8800GTX to $450 an approx saving of $100/150 on todays prices.
At the opposite end of the scale, you can grab yourself a DX10 card for $49 in the shape of an 8100GS.
