Post A Picture of Your Last Purchase

Oh wow freaky ! I got up at the crack of dawn today because I'm having these delivered by Amazon !

My first ever set of Planars so I decided to celebrate with another amp :D

Currently running...

On this

And these

On this

And these are my portables (as well as Beats Solo, Studio & power replicas for reggae and rap)

Currently using four sound cards (Recon3D, SB XFI TIT, Xonar D2X and Xonar U1 lite)

Let me know what you think man. As I said, first pair of Planars I'm really excited :D

Hahaha lol freaky!

I'm currently running a set of K551's which into a Nuforce UDAC3, but both of those will likely get handed down to my brother once these two babies show up :)
It's my first set of planars too, but the He400S's aren't really known for having the classic 'planar sound'.

Also for the love of god, get yourself some HM5 Angled pleather pads for the HE400S's, they're known to be a little thin sounding stock, and the pads transform them for the better :)

I'm having absolutely no issues with the sound dude. Honestly thin is about as far removed from the way these things sound it's unreal. I don't know what amp people are using them on but on this Dot they sound incredible.

I've got them running on the Asus Xonar D2X. They're easily the most muscular set of cans I have. They easily outclass my other cans for bass and depth of sound.

Absolutely thrilled with them tbh. They're as bassy as a set of Beats Pro but don't carry any of the clumsiness the Beats have.

Seriously the best set of cans I've heard yet.

Saying that though the Grados are about as accurate as I've ever heard on the Graham Slee. They just don't drop deep, but for live music and so on (and acoustic stuff) they're unmatched.

But they're just nowhere near as fun as these Planars.

Have you tried them on your solid state amps? Maybe it's the tubes doing their magic and giving them some extra in the trouser department, so to speak ;)

Not yet no but you could well be right :) I read that the Dot 1+ was very warm and that was exactly what I wanted given I already have the polar opposite of sharp.

I know that the Xonar adds bass unless you use Hifi mode, which disables all of the enhancements and sends a raw signal through. I tried that last night and yeah, they were lacking in bass a little. Well, compared to before any way.

One thing they did trip up on was live music. That was with the EQ enabled though as I like a little extra bass and treble usually. They seemed a bit muddy and clumsy on a couple of the songs I tried. You need to remember though, I have Grado RS2E. Probably the cleanest most stripped back set of headphones it's possible to buy. On live music they are absolutely unmatched by anything I have ever heard and their soundstage is just incredible. I'm constantly looking behind me when listening to live music lol.

Once the Graham Slee has warmed up (I've only just switched it all on) I will give it a try.

One thing that has absolutely amazed me about Planar Magnetic though is how well they hold their bass and still do other things properly at the same time.

Obviously with a classic headphone driver it's very similar to any other woofer. Paper/plastic and a coil. Once you start bogging down that driver with bass it tends to start falling off in the treble department. It's understandable really, given how it works. Planar have an enormous driver that's sandwiched under tension though, so no matter how hard you go on the bass the rest of the spectrum just seems to punch its way through. I've never known any set of headphones ever to manage that feat. Even with my Beats Pro which are absolutely enormous as soon as you raise the bass settings from 0 they just become clumpy, heavy and confused.

Which makes these a blast to listen to. I used to be into car audio back in the day so I do love my bass (it's kinda like sugar for me) and there are plenty of music types that I listen to that lend themselves to bass and being completely beat driven (Man Parrish, old electro and old hip hop) and these cans are just marvelous for that.

It's funny really. Every time I buy a new set of headphones (and I never sell them I just end up designating a function for them like Classical, Live, Acoustic ETC) it's like I've discovered my music collection all over again. So I end up listening to music all day long and noticing the new bass tones etc. Great hobby :D

What sound card are you using to drive the amp? or is the amp an AIO with a DAC ETC?

Ed. Just done some looking at it seems your unit is an AIO? DAC amp and soundcard?

You should be fine dude. You should get some sort of Asus AI suite so you can tune the sound if you need to.

Definitely a huge upgrade from my Moto G! Better camera (image above was taken with it, in mediocre lighting and cropped to 600x448), very light and overall very responsive. Only issue I have with it so far is the heat. It gets immensely hot tbh. This was just after I did a 17MB update (which took quite long, by the way) while charging:

I believe 'bms' is the CPU temp. Obvs the CPU and battery temps aren't horrible, but the phone was only updating. Plus, the phone itself was quite hot, even with a case on it. Not too hot to touch, but definitely very uncomfortable. I hope this will improve over time. Other than that, it's been great!

I have the Nexus 5x too. Heat is an issue when brightness is set very high and it's doing something intensive, like updating Andriod OS. Problem with all Andriod devices is long update times. Other than that it's an amazing phone and gets even better when paired with Google's Fi network;)

So the heat is normal? I'm honestly glad to hear that! I was starting to get a bit worried. I even thought of taking off the case to see if it helped. That being said, I might return this case and get something a bit sturdier, like the official 'adopted' case. I don't think this one offers any drop protection. It collects fingerprints and dust like crazy too. It's already filthy after a couple of hours of use, and I washed my hands thoroughly

Sadly, Google Fi isn't available in the Netherlands yet. I'm quite happy at my current provider though, I get 240 call minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data (3G though) for about €10. Still, I would've loved to give it a try.

So you're going Music -> Xonar (with Eq/other stuff) -> spdif -> Aune T1 DAC -> line out -> little dot amp -> He-400s?

I'm personally a big fan of not ing with the source signal :P
I game a lot and even in games I just play with straight stereo since I don't enjoy dolby headphone/any other reverby enhancements. Especially with music I'm super anal xD I use WASAPI in foobar so not even windows can with the signal :)

And yeah, planar is awesome :D I've been considering buying these cans for like a month now, in that time all I've been doing is researching planar. I've also had the Asus Essence unit for about 2 weeks now, I bought it earlier in preparation for this headphone upgrade :)
It's cool because it's essentially a Xonar STX, but in USB form, and with some small upgrades. Even with my K551's it was miles ahead of my UDAC3 and my old fiio E10.

The HE-400s and the angled hm5 pads are coming tomorrow morning, I can't wait :)

No dude.

Asus D2X - Little Dot via analogue.
SB XFI Titanium - Graham Slee
PC - Aune TK1 (it's its own sound card/DAC)
SB Recon 3D - home made breakout box.

I am using multiple control centres for the outputs which I can switch between in Win 10.

I only add bass or for that matter any sound changes to the D2X which I bought deliberately to run a large set of more bass driven headphones for dance/rap/hip hop/reggae.

For live and acoustic recordings I use the Slee/Grado.

For gaming and fast paced music and for keeping the sound to myself I use the B&O.

So yeah, if you find the sound s little thin don't be afraid to use the Asus EQ it works well without manipulating the sound too much :)

Oooops, itchy purchase finger! Gigabyte Force K85

Had to be done my old Gigabyte membrane board is getting a little ratty and it's served me well for the last 5 years so it's about time she was retired. Sticking with Gigabyte still but moving onto a mech this time, with a choice of red and blue switches.

looks nice, I take it the lighting is RGB

I got that itch fingers thing but it's for a complete system overhaul.

I've had a Gigabyte keyboard for ages and must admit considering it's not treated with the best respect it's really lasted well

I have to say Gigabyte do make a solid quality board which seem to be the only boards I struggle to break, not intentionally I might add, I'm not rough with them it's just with everyday use and being moved around.

Nice purchase! I too had the itchy finger today... got myself a nice upgrade before 3rd party 480's come out(or if the 1060 is out then, either one)

and some DDR4 sticks, but nothing fancy:p

Going ITX. Recently moved soo my Define S is currently taking up WAY to much space.. so selling that off(upsets me because I really LOVE this case). Hopefully Phanteks is everything people say there are, was really the only ITX case that would work for me.

Nice little upgrade you have going there, build log!!

If I can find a decent camera.. sure:p
Only reason I upgraded was because I got the I7 way below MSRP($70 less) which made it roughly $25 more than the 6600k. Hopefully it's worth it... Really wanted X99 but they have no ITX boards(except ROG but overpriced) and the cheapest 6850k is worth more than this whole upgrade and then some:rolleyes:
