Post A Picture of Your Last Purchase

Well I got my headphones. They sound lovely, but was expecting far more bass. Even at the highest setting they're not even half as bassy as my Beats Pro. I will wear them in then I guess I will have to start playing with my EQ.

Slightly disappointed as I wanted fun. Bah.

Good news though is that I ordered the old Pro models but got the new Pro Plus models instead worth £170. They come with a tool and 16 different sets of back inserts.

Which headphones bud ?

I bought that lot a few days back. Now I know people diss Beats, but back in the 90s I used to fit very expensive audiophile set ups in cars, so I do like my head thumping bass. Right now they just feel a little watery though admittedly that's with a flat EQ.

I guess I will have to go back to Winamp and do some tuning, but these were supposed to be the most bass calorific cans you can buy from a group test of cans testing only for bass.

Honestly, they really don't sound anywhere near as good as I thought they would. I paid £35 for my high quality Beats Pro rip offs and so far they have beaten these Beyers in every department apart from the build quality. The Beats weigh about four times as much, but the adjusters on them slip and they're not as comfy.

I'll wear the Beyers in then hit the EQ. Only thing is I fear if I do that I will be changing it every time I listen to a different album :(

Ooooh very nice, Always wanted to try a tube amp but could never find any for a reasonable price ^_^

With the beyers you have to wear them in a bit and they are meant to be very flat/neutral :)

Yeah I was just expecting them to be a little more exciting I guess. Just listening to Royksopp - Poor Leno and they definitely seem to respond better to more beat driven music. I guess they're just not up for a bit of Tracy Chapman.. They do sound lovely though in the quality department and instrument separation is fantastic..

Check out my DAC thread in the sound forum dude. £130, it'll blow you away. Does run a little warm mind but I can live with that :)

How do you think it will compare to the Epiphany AMP/DAC as it's in the same price range ?

I really don't know dude but I do know if that one isn't valve then it's a bit expensive. Check around for reviews of the Aune, people absolutely love it.

One thing I have noticed today is that it sounds a bit brighter than it did yesterday. I would imagine the valve is burning in.

I've also rectified the bass issue. It was Microsoft Groove taking out the oomph. The Beats sound good with it but not the Beyers. Take that into Winamp and up the low end bass a little bit and boom, we're cooking on gas.

I think that in the price bracket there is no beating this DAC unit. Seriously, the build quality and packing will absolutely blow you away. When I was handed it I nearly dropped it as it's really heavy. With the PSU brick we are talking about 3 kilos.

It came triple boxed too and you have to fit the valve and guard yourself. Nice thing is it comes with two sets of guards, so I guess if you ever break one or what not you have a spare :)

I did a lot of reading and so on before making the jump but I'm glad I did. The best part is you can change up how it sounds by buying new valves for about £20 each.

Valves ? AFAIK it's just circuitry inside ergo overpriced ^_^

I might look into this AMP/DAC you listed in the other thread, A tube AMP/DAC for that price looks to be promising over the Phoebus I currently have :)

Yeah I would go with the valve every time. Just personal preference, but since owning my fist valve amp when I was about 10 (I stripped it out of an old music center and build a chassis for it with my uncle) I've been hooked.

They can be a bit spitty and bright if you don't feed them with a good quality source but they do sound incredibly warm and comforting :)

For many years I had a Rogers (BBC) E40a, that thing was just the best amp I've ever owned. Managed to get it free when the factory closed down..

£130 for what it is (you'll see if you order one, the box and build quality are top drawer) are unbeatable. For £99 Creative do one but it's not valve and it's tiny. This thing is serious.

I'm not dissing that one on OCUK (it probably cost less elsewhere though knowing them) but it's just a completely different kettle of fish to valve.

I'm just happy that valves are mass produced because dude, they used to be eye wateringly expensive. When my first one eventually died (it was mono lmao) the valves cost around £250 back then in the late 80s.

It's definitely good to see them back in production at affordable prices. My Fatman Blu has three and my Koda uses two. The Koda isn't valve powered it's transistor but the entire pre stage is valve so the sound is spot on.

Interesting, So what would the difference be between using 1 tube or 3 ?

Now you've got me :D I've never really studied the electronics but they're like taps. I think they stack inline to add more power. So basically they replace the transistors found in a solid state amplifier (which are also like taps) to produce the sound.

They sound totally different to transistors though. And of course each valve is slightly different so changing them out changes the sound completely.

I think I will order the two or three that people rave about for mine, then have a play. Just don't ever touch one with your bare skin. They're like halogen bulbs (vacuum) and any oil on the surface causes the heat to all rush to the one place which can damage them. I used a clean cloth to handle mine, and then was super careful about placing the guard over it.

So I take they have a slight glow to them ?

Also how much of an upgrade from the Asus Phoebus do you think it will be ?

Tube amps are a personal preference. They add more noise and have a lower fidelity than solid state amps. That said, it is these properties as to why particular people prefer tubes over SS amps.

Absolutely. They have a very unique sound.

I think it would be a massive upgrade. The good part is you don't have to ditch your sound card and according to a friend of mine you should run a DAC LINE only. I'm running mine USB atm because I need to make custom RCAs but I will list what you need in a moment.. Right, pic. Photobucket is being a dick so I tried to attach.. Any way, what you want to do ideally is feed the DAC with a RCA signal. For that you need a headphone to RCA adapter (about £2). Then, run the sound card into the RCA line in on the back. If you want to you can run the line out on to something else, your speakers usually.

This way you get to keep your sound card. Me? I am making up my cables (you'll see some very expensive purple cable there, that's Rockford Fosgate pro). But a decent set of RCAs should cost you around £5-£500 a set, depending on how mad you want to go. I can post some reccs if you want :)

Edit. Pic soon but basically yes, they glow. They have like a warm orange glow to them but this one also has LEDs in the base so the bottom lights up white...

I love the Ghetto feel of it :) it's just got so much charm

Hey don't knock the Chinese they make some of the best amps in the world now for very affordable prices !

The beauty of a valve amp is the simplicity, and how you must use pre built valves. So basically you can never cheap out on valves or get around that. There really isn't that much more to them so long as they are a pure valve amp and not a pre valve/transistor like my Koda.

No no, I meant mine, this is what it looks like

The only thing I'm not super duper keen on is the Blue LED that lights up the Tube, I prefer the warm glow of the hot plate in it personally.

I know you meant yours dude :)

I almost bought one about ten times but never had a decent set of cans to warrant it.. Can't you replace the valve on it?
