Because of this...

I will quote from my post on futuremark.com

Well after buying a 6600GT today i thought I would fix the mach II and bench the card... well didnt that idea quickly hit the fan, After looking at the head closely i realised that not only had the screw holder from the a64 head was still attached to the screw (Soulder had snapped) but the burning was more extensive than i thought... I decided to investigate futher and break off some of the burnt parts of the head to see that there was a massive gap between the head (black plastic) and the filliant (Yellow stuff) so i can only asssume that air has gotten between this gap and caused the smouldering, something i didnt even think to check with the white plastic seal over the top of the unit... lucky Nventiv are out of business or i would be e-mailing them with this. Anyways the Pictures [wink]

Screw..

Burning..

More Burning..

And the size of the gap between....

Noz isnt a happy man again... [roll]

EDIT- Another thing I dont understand is the sensor is in that region yet it didnt differ in temperature at all even though it was burning away... stupid POS [roll]
Any possibility of completely replacing the head? Or is the whole thing fubared? I figured this is the best place to ask

Cheers for any feedback at all, feel free to ask any questions... except how it happen.. im not sure of that myself, all i can do is speculate.

Cheers

Bloody hell mate! That is a nasty hole. Never seen anything that bad before, my Mach II has a little warping of the plastic around the edge which has seal string blocking it all up, but that is majorly rough looking.

I do know that you can get a Baker18 Block for the head and use a VapoLS mount to hold it down, with modification, however you would have to get the block fitted. Phil may be able to get you a new head from ECT but again it needs fitting. Luckily Phil does have a guy that can do repairs etc, BUT I've no idea how much this costs. I know it's £100 for regassing, but for something like this you may need other new parts, and this could run up quite the bill.

Phil should be along to help, and will give you amounts for this, but you may have to get the new head yourself, if you get a Baker18, theres a thread on here somewhere with a link. But its £70 odd with shipping and then needs fitting, which is probably not going to be cheap! Hope you get it fixed and sorted mate.

hmm looks like sombody dropped it in a boiling pot of acid.

that is some major corrosion.

hope it doesnt happen to mine :D

(phil can help you out, to replace the head, when he gets back from his hols)

The baker heads do take a while to come over from the states I am sure you can stick one onto the standard mach2 line but sometimes it is better to use a new line more flexable ?? but a baker head is around £70 - £90 to get it on your doorstep I think then I think phil said his man will fit them with regass etc for around £150 - £200 which isnt too bad that is with the stock suction line it seems a little expensive but you will have a hell of a good unit :) I am thinking of getting mine done ;)

Yeah so am I mate! My original Mach II is sat on the floor under my desk, cos it sometimes frosts up and messes up the controller because of the small gap in the side of mine that appeared cos the plastic warped.

When the heater element burns the poly euraphane or however you spell it lol then just unplug the heater and use some neoprene tape or armaflex tape and wrap it around the head as for the gaps seal string will fix any air gaps for condensation :)

so in theory i could clean it up a bit, seal string the gap and just use it for benching, hmmm good idea.. might give it a try when i have some spare time...

You dont even only need to use it for benching as long as the rest of it is in one peace then it will be fine to use 24/7 like that with the amourflex tape on it

man that is nasty. I knew you said it was bust nozzer but never imagined

that!!!!

Is this a common fault with mach II's you all seem to know allot about how to fix it, which makes m think it is!!!

Anyway hope you get it sorted mate

No, this is not normal at all. This is the first case of whatever you would call that, that I have seen. The only similar problem is the plastic hold around the copper head coming away from the black head surrounding, which is similar to this but without the scorch marks and destroyed platic, and only leaves a small gap, which is easily fixed with seal string, and I have found that if you don't seal this properly I get condensation between the screws on the black surround/mount for the head and this could drip onto your graphics card, but that is just me, others may find it won't leave condensation.
