Please Help, Z68 Motherboard Resets Every 2-5 Seconds

Hi all,

I recently built a Sandy Bridge rig with the following specs:

CPU: i7 2600k

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD4 B3

RAM: G. Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR2

GPU: MSI GTX 560Ti Hawk

SSD: Corsair Force 3 60GB

HDD: Seagate 7200.12 1TB + WD Green 2TB 5400RPM

Cooler: NH-D14

OS: Win 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Case: Corsair 600T

Optical Drive: Samsung SH-223B

I set up the system and it ran fine at stock with no issues to speak of. Then I first overclocked it to 4.7GHZ HT On at 1.295Vcore and Level 6 load line calibration, these settings were also stable with no issues to speak of.

Then I went for the big 5GHZ and upped the Vcore to 1.375 with level 6 LLC, it crashed after 50 seconds of LinX and got a BSOD. Since then whenever it boots up it will maybe get to the Gigabyte logo and then turn off and then back on every couple seconds (2-5 approx).

When trouble shooting I found that when I removed the CMOS battery the board would not have the reset issue but when I put it back in the board would keep resetting every couple of seconds.

Things to note:

-I've never pushed more than 1.375Vcore with Level 6 LLC. It MAXES at 1.408Vcore in the BIOS.

-I've never seen the temps exceed 75C under LinX. Under the 4.7GHZ 1.295Vcore settings it topped at 70C and got to 75C under my last settings (5GHZ 1.375Vcore).

Thanks in advance,

I've pulled out the CMOS battery for over 10 minutes but I haven't reset it by putting a jumper on the pins yet because it seems my motherboard doesn't come with the jumper.

Try disconnecting everything from the motherboard RAM, GPU, CPU, all PSU cables and CMOS battery and leave it for about 20 mins, then reassemble and try again.

Had the same problem when i started oc`ing on gigabyte z68x-ud7.

When it restarts itself every 2-5 seconds, press start button until it stops, pull out powercord, hold start button 10 sec.Wait 30 seconds, plug in powercord again, start again. Some bios settings need to be set again.

This is working for me

just touch the two pins and only the two pins above the front panel connector with a small tipped screwdriver to short the two pins resetting the cmos Alternatly if you have an old hdd laying around check and see if it has a jumper you can use. Funny they went with a 2pin setup over the old three pin where ya move it from one two - two three to clear it.

cool someone who has a similar board has a solution easier than mine

I will remember this as I have a UD4 coming tomorrow

I had a very similar problem with my maximus 4 extreme-z... It's a new build and I just finished outing it together and I tried it out at stock bios setting and everything worked fine. But then I tried to OC to a modist 4.2 ghz and set the ram to their specified speed/timings and I got that whole restarting every few seconds thing. I thought I broke something in my first build already, but then after I cleared the CMOS, and used default settings, it worked again. So I'm not sure why this is happening to us. But when I get time I will try changing 1 thing in the bios at a time, to see if there is something in particular that is causing this.

Btw did u change ur ram settings at all? I know sometimes that can mess out ur OC, but I'm not sure. All I know is find a way to clear ur bios and put it back to default and u should be up and running and can try again

Thanks SieB, kilobravo, S-I-N and everyone else who responded for helping me get everything working, I really appreciate it. After I disassembled everything I narrowed it down to just a CMOS issue but shorting with the screwdriver or taking out the battery itself wouldn't work oddly. So I actually had to take the battery out for a minute and then touch the pins with my screwdriver. After that I would just have enough time to get into the BIOS and load fail safe defaults.

Once again I'd like to emphasize how thankful I am for everyone's time and help, I built this computer for my uncle and my hair was falling out over the fact that it could have possibly went bust. Saved me a huge amount of stress. You guys are awesome.
