Shopping for a new MB CPU, I've never done the Intel thing so I need some help.

I've narrowed my CPU choices between these two. Sorry not allowed to post links yet... Shopping on Newegg

Q8300 2.5 ghz or the Q6600 2.4ghz, trying to figure why the 2.4 is slightly more money then the 2.5 processor.

Which one would you buy? WHY?

One has 4 cores, one has 2...

the q8300 only has a 7.5 multiplier, the q6600 has a 9 multi.

Keep this in mind depending on if you plan on clocking it.

the newer low end quads dont really like fsb either, so dont expect much above 3ghz on the q8300

where as the q6600 should see 3.6 with decent cooling.

Overclocking yes, but seriouse overclocking. Will be using a Zalmen orb CPU cooler or what ever its called. That should get me some very good OC. Not looking to surprise everyone, just squeeze out everything I can while being 110% stable. As long as CPU last 3 years I'm good.

Imo, go on ebay find an older q6600 G0, you'll see 4ghz with it. The newer Q6600 G0 chips aren't half as good and have a higher stock VID.

Also, have a long think about the E8400 vs q6600. A normal pc user should go dual core, the E8400 E0 stepping can do 4-4.6ghz 24/7 !!!

better still go on e-bay and find a qx9650 the are easy to acheive a 4ghz clock with a good m/board on air and well worth the extra ££

hmm any1 seen any reports on the Q8xxx cpus ?

I'm imagining they're meant to be cooler, but how do they perform ? On the scale of the E8xxx ? They are 2xE8xxx welded under 1 hood aren't they ?

Yea, I have a grand to spend on something that will depreciate 80% in a year. :nono:

I think I'm set on the EVGA NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI 8 Phase Digital PWM, 3-Way SLI, VDroop Control FTW combo deal with CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 1600 for $240 after rebates.

Monkey7 suggested the E7200, you guys also suggest 2 cores instead of 4. Guess 4 cores just aren't really needed just yet?

For gaming and regular use the quadcore is just overkill. Causes additional heat (noise) and consumes more power while dualcores clock higher, resulting in higher framerates in most games.

If you have some money to spare you could take a look at the E8400/8500/8600 cpus, just a bit better than the E7x00 series.

Yea newegg doesn't have the 7200, sold out. Wish the rebates wouldn't take two months to get. Hmm that E8400 seems ok, but then the E7400 is $50 cheaper and puts me right at my $400 upgrade mark. After rebates under that $400 wall.

type in qx9650 in ebay...I think youll find one alot less than a grand...core i7 965's are £850!!:nono:

Dont bother with the nvid mobo, get yourself a decent intel chipset.

You wont get mega clocks on a quad as they dont like fsb.

And that cooler isnt all that either.

Mega clocking = water cooling

Mega clocking = Rampage Extreme 775 & E8600 dual core

4.5ghz + attainable on water, key with these cpu's is 10x multi and will do insane fsb.

will game better than ANY quad aswell.

That MB gives me a hard on just looking at it. It's worth going with the better board. Did it before when I bought the Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe MB, I was on the waiting list. I fried that board (another story). But ATM I can't afford it and all that extra gear that would involve. My limit is $400 for MB CPU MEM.
