Planning. Opinions welcome.

It worked :D

Ue0zDKs.jpg

woohoo.

And then it stopped lol. Typical Xonar STX fashion. Would play a couple of tunes then click out the relays.

I then removed the SATA power from the riser and it's been rock solid ever since. So it works, it just doesn't need the extra current (and was probably why it was tripping out). I've had it going since 11pm last night and it's perfect.

Treated myself to this.

N2STnb2.jpg

Which will go in the bottom (or top in my case) slot that is either NVME or M.2 SATA.

I also ordered this for the riser.

VpF8Sok.jpg

And then I found out I was stupid. X570's PCH adds 16 extra lanes. However, even though I ordered two Patriot Viper NVME I can only use one as they have large heatsinks on.

LC21xFz.jpg

And thus won't fit under the armour. So, I am going to use the SATA drive under there and then fit another of these into the X4 full length slot.

QQjFgmu.jpg

Then I will migrate the OS to that, leaving 1tb NVME for games and 1tb MSATA for music and downloads etc. More than enough.

The new sound card came this morning, so maybe later tonight I will try and get that fitted. IDK though, as I am enjoying a weekend off after running around like mad all week so I could come to mum's and help her out. Cooking, cleaning. All the fun stuff lol.

OK sound card and riser fitted (and installed and working). SSD worked too, so thanks for the advice there guys.

The blue USB cable looks a bit crap, but I've ordered the above. If they are too long I can just get a black 60cm for about £3.

There is one thing I don't like, mind. The front rad mount thing has 140mm holes and 120mm holes. I am using a double 120, so it looks a bit "gappy". Even though the filter.

So I got these in gunmetal. They are 140, so will cover the gap. I won't be hooking up the RGB but they weren't too cheap given they are alu.

Still, £36 in the grand scheme of things didn't seem too bad.

OK, those USB cables don't work. So it's plan B.

bQezzl5.jpg

I've ordered it in two sizes (10mm and 15mm) and will see how I get on. I also got this

Q4h4LxZ.jpg

So I am sure that I can come up with something more suitable.

The one thing that is super annoying is that the sound cards are not being held at the bottom of the PCIE slot. Even if I had the genuine Lian Li cable it would not stop the secondary input card from doing it. They bend in when you connect things. I had two options. Drill through the bottom of the slot so I could bolt into the holes in the cards (not a fan) or make something out of 8mm acrylic and stick it in with 3m to stop them doing that. I ordered the 3m and acrylic. If that fails I will have to drill the case, but I would rather not.

Ugh. Decided to hook up the frames. I had to get this to do so.

I wouldn't have, but HWC did a video on the neons today that I was looking at and I cracked.

55onWno.jpg

I suppose it will be nice to actually see the hardware in there.

Tonight I will be practising the art of turning the brightness down lol. Got the braid for the USB cable today, but not the other supplies. I did fit the 256gb SSD last night, and it worked fine. GPU has remained at X16 too which is awesome.

I did email myself the benchmarks at stock(ish) but they never arrived and I had come upstairs by that point. I will send them over again tonight.

I also realised that a certain part of the case is removable, so I took it off and sorted out the cables.

7pizetM.jpg

So out it came, and it has a load of holes to tie the cables to. Can't believe I didn't notice that before. I'm contemplating running the GPU cables into it and down, but I don't know if they will all fit in there. Something for next time I have it all apart perhaps.

OK benchmarks from last week. All stock, no PBO. Ram is 3600 16-19-19-40 ATM.

The GPU was around 2145, with drops to 2130. Tonight now that I have enabled PBO and lowered the RAM timings nothing from 3Dmark will even load. It might be a background app (like Armoury for the RGB ) IDK.

No more yacky blue cable. Still waiting for a couple of things to ship, but we're getting somewhere. I only needed the 10mm braid for the USB, so I am going to use the 15mm on the nasty USB3 header cable.

I think I will also cut some black vinyl to cover up the red on the sound card. Though tbh once the panels go on you can't really see it much. Still debating whether I want to remove the cage again and try and cram the three 8 pin GPU cables down it.

My "neons" and controller finally shipped today with DPD. Longest I have ever had to wait, but patience is a virtue. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow night :D

Can;t believe I missed this, Damn smexy build !

Right. Time for an upgrade of sorts. Well, a double upgrade.

I've been wanting to get a better CPU in my rig away from home. This one.

ufJO9SD.jpg

It's currently rocking a R5 3600. Which I picked up at an inflated price at the time. It wasn't totally terrible though.

I wanted to change out the 3950x at home to a 5950x, or possibly a 5900x and then put the 3950x into that small rig. Well, small-er. However, AMD IMO are being too greedy with their prices and IMO have not dropped them anywhere near enough.

The 5900x is still £450 and I refuse to pay that. Even used ones are fetching £420.

Had a look at the Intel stuff earlier. Specifically the 12700 KF which is currently for sale at £360 retail boxed. Some £90 cheaper than the 5900x. Fact is it's quite probably faster than the 5900x (not checked, but will). Of course I would need a new board, but that doesn't bother me so much as just hating to pay greedy prices. This, for example, is £220 and takes DDR4. Of which mine is 4133 on the slow two and 4333 on the other two (both 8 pack extreme).

It's about 1000 times better looking than the X570 TUF I fitted too.

BzSRGdk.jpg

So I think that is the plan. Have ordered a LGA 1700 retrofit kit from Corsair for the H100i Platinum I have left over from the small build too. The H100 is the £70 cheaper Coolit pump version, the Platinum is a much better cooler. Due to my GPU, CPU and RAM choices when I built this rig I had to wind back on the board and cooler a little bit.

Sod it. Looked around and the KF was £20 cheaper than any one else. Merry Xmas to me.

KssfmXr.jpg

Oh yeah, ordered the retrofit kit. Thankfully this is the only time I haven't binned the Intel stuff.

Which will go on this.

I will use my Eloops. Save the RGB for something else.

Well I might have known given my crap luck this year.... I changed the delivery address yesterday because I knew I would not be here. When I got back there was a card in my house telling me I had missed them. WTF? then I track it and get this.

FFS. 7 miles away, I don't drive and no way to get there. Will have to try and arrange something Monday ffs. In a cruel twist of irony.

Recently I had a good rummage through a box. I found two blue M.2 drives. Took me a while to remember what they are. When I did one of my Threadripper builds I bought two identical Phison NVME drives to RAID. They are 256gb each. This would have given me a boot drive of approx 480gb, and go bloody fast.

Then I found out what a total pain in the ringpiece AMD RAID is, and gave up.

eET3qyw.jpg

I didn't return them because they worked fine. However, I am hopeful that now they will work because Intel's RAID is all BIOS and no ing around in Windows with controller drivers etc etc etc having to have an account on AMD to get the software ETC ETC ETC.

Those are both fitted now, on the PCH controller. I've reserved the CPU controller for the 1tb which will be for game storage, and I have an additional 1tb Samsung M.2 SATA drive.

My buddys have been ribbing me about temps on AL. I was going to fit a H100i RGB Platinum, but it's "only" 240mm. I then realised that fits my Threadripper board, so I am going to use that on there for my new upcoming "SR VR" build. You will see more of that in the New Year.

So for the AL rig I ordered this.

cZ2JYfO.jpg

Didn't want RGB and am 1 Eloop short in black to swap the fans out. So this came with the perfect setup, and I won't have to bin the fans as they're really good.

Jf92x9q.jpg

LOL, I found AMD RAID to be a bit tricky too. I set up a triple NVME raid for my X399 system. Works quite well once you get it up and running, but there was a 3 step driver load process you had to figure out.
