Pin HDD to taskbar

Hi all just reformatted my computer and i wanted a quick launch shortcut in the task bar and of course windows 7 doesn't allow things that simple so i racked my brain for a few minuets and fond a few things on Google and this is what to do.

First off right click on your desktop and chose "NEW" and then select "TEXT DOCUMENT"

l_1newfolder.jpg

Name the text document what you want but make sure that you change the .txt to .exe

l_2test_txt.jpg

if you cant see the .txt when you are renaming the file you first need to make windows show file extensions.

To do this go to the start menu and type "SHOW OR HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS" this should bring a window up like this.

l_3showfileextensions.jpg

Untick "HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILES TYPES"

if you have done all the steps correctly this is the way the file should look.

l_4test_exe.jpg

Next right click on the file you have just created and create a shortcut on the desktop.

You now should have two files of the same name on the desktop. Right click the one with "SHORTCUT" at the end and then click properties.

Hear is where you can change the icon image.

Once you have done that click ok and the right click the file again and select "PIN TO TASKBAR"

The icon will now appear in the taskbar.

Now that the icon is in the taskbar we can now link it to a hard drive. to do this we need to change the path.

Do this by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar and selecting properties.

The same window as before will appear. Where it says "TARGET" change it to the directory of the hard drive. In this case i will be changing it to "D:\" (without the quotes)

Click ok and if all the steps were followed correctly it should link to the file you specified.

If you need any more help with this matter just PM me or reply to this post and i will get back to you as soon as possible.

lol - very long winded. but this is even easier...

right-click the start bar (the windows icon) and select "open windows explorer"

or....

open windows explorer and select "computer"

right-click on any drive (in the right pane), and select "create shortcut"

it will appear on the desktop

Yer but you cant create a direct link to a file that way. Not one that isn't upder explorer

The way i show i the only way you can do it.

start - computer - hdd - porn

i know 7 can be pain in the arse with shortcuts on taskbar, i had to google when i first got it to get my quick launch back i was gutted

just becuase YOU don't know how to do it - does not mean it is hard to do

Well tell everyone how to do it and they i will shut up. Just don't tell me i don't know hot to do it.

I'm not the only one why has had this problem, There is no easy way to do what i have show. If you no better speak up.

I would love to know how you would do it. seems you know everything.

OMFG!!!! why is everyone getting so argumentative lately. JEEEEEEEZ!!!!!!

Dug I know you prolly didnt mean to start and argument over this but sometime the way things are typed can easily be taken out of context. DT-525 please try and understand some of us are trying to help and text can come off as not as meant. Dug maybe instead show ur way of doing it instead of the other approach. DT-525 be more patient and maybe we can all learn something without all the bickering between the posts.

We all have opinions and knowledge of how to do certain thing we need to tolerate and explain why another method might be easier instead of basically saying something is wrong or rubbish. This is a learning and fun forum not a troll bashing one.

Goto file you would like to create short cut to.

Hold left shift and left click mouse button on file and move to were you would like short cut. Done and dusted.

i knew exactly what DT-525 wanted to achieve, and it is possible

but, it needs you to be able to edit the registry manually AND use the group policy editor via scripting

this is no easy task, and if messed up, can FUBAR your system.

i am not going to post the how-to's on here, as a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing

If you ha dread the tutorial you would see that you don't edit the registry you are just targeting a text file to a HDD. Read before posting again.

Both of you are doing it the long way so lets simplify it....

You already have a windows explorer shortcut so just edit that.

Right click the windows explorer quick launch icon, then right click windows explorer and select properties....

properties.jpg

Change the target to the drive you want to target. Simples.

Love to hear if it can be done easier.
