physically building a comp

since this is going to be my first time building a comp is there anything i should know before starting. For example is there an order for putting the parts in, and precautions i should take etc...

make sure youre earthed if possible, dont wear any nylon or do it on a carpet. only take the componants out of the box when theyre needed. I always put my motherboard in first, then cpu, ram, everything else, PSU but theres probably an order it SHOULD be done in

wool isnt good either, have used cotton clothes in the past without problem.

could also invest in an ESD-bracelet (translation is probably wrong) and use it to ground yourself to avoid ElectroStaticDischarge.

also read up on "how to build a computer".

if you google on it you will find many guides on how to.

also be carefull with the screwdriver, not uncommon to slip and break a motherboard with it.

also do it when you have ALOT of time over and have sleeped well and is relaxed.

It depends on the components.

If you have a HSF with retaining bracket, then the cpu, HSF and ram go on the mobo before its put in the case.

As a rule id put the PSU in 1st, as getting it past the HSF is a bloody nightmare.

Another thing is (depending on teh case) putting the hdds in before the main inards. Optical drives go in form the front. so them last.

yea sorry i didnt make myself clear, FIT the psu but hook it up last and dont use a magnetised screwdriver (as much as you might want to)

I always fit the CPU/Heatsink and RAM to the Motherboard first, then fit the motherboard. i just have never liked pushing down on the motherboard when is isnt a flat surfice underneath.

something like that i used to do too but amd64 have such a nice way to fasten the heatsink so it can easily be installed and removed even with the motherboard in the case.

Ditto, CPU - Heatsink - Memory all on before putting the motherboard in.

The rest of the components really depend on the case size/type/layout. Quite often i put in the PSU last - otherwise all the cables can get in the way.

Here's how I do it. First I put all my fans, hard drives, and CD-Rom's in my case. Then I mount my mobo. I mount my mobo first so it's sorta grounded I guess if u wanna call it that, and so when I mount my components and cpu heatsink I know it's secure and not going anywhere. Then I mount my CPU & RAM and install my heatsink. Then I proceed to install all cards, and hook up my front panel connections. Then I plug in all my CD Rom's, fans, hdd's, etc. Then I carefully slide my PSU in, and plug in the power to everything. Done, woot. I don't usually bother with wiring until a day after building it, so my nerves are eased and I know everything works ok.

Mostly cause the mobo is fairly brittle and people have been known to wrestle heatsinks onto the mobo and break either the PCB or scratch off the contact lines on the mobo

I just wish intel would think of another mounting method for there stock coolers of the socket 775's. such a horrible design!!

We do have a private (CSS clan) one, but its always empty unless being used for a match. Best bet would be to drop a message on the forums, and we can either chat to you in the OC3D chatroom, or give you our TS details then.
