Phenom2 X4 960T voltage query

Hello!

I recently bought this cpu replacing a 720, and seems nice and cool.

But there's voltage problem. Its default 1.475V when turbo boost enabled. With cool&quiet auto Everest shows me 1.3-1.5V

If I disable turbo boost its 1.35V default and with cool&quiet auto Everest shows me 1.3V... Never below that. Why can't go 1.0V or 1.1V ??

I've never worked with an AMD chip/board so I'm not sure how they overclock. But I can suggest updating/flashing the BIOS. That seems to resolve similar issues.

Have you tried changing the voltage in the BIOS instead of just changing the profiles? You can't expect to get your desired voltages by simply choosing one of the predefined profiles.

Usually when someone overclocks, he raise the voltage. Point now is to lower voltage.

As I said I m not talking for o/c or for any o/c profile. I m talking for the default voltage. Suppose c&q throw down voltage when idle, right?...

Which game is that in your signature? Those numbers are from single or multi?

I know, I'm asking you to check the bios for a voltage option so you can manually enter a value in there. However you will have to stress test to see if the CPU is stable at the lower voltage. You have to remember that all CPUs will be different and so will require different levels of voltage to be stable at certain clocks.

The game is Battlefield 3 and those numbers are for Multiplayer

Well, things ate like this-->

- I have a Sempron 140 with Vcore scale 0.825-1.35V and c&q goes it down to 1.0V when idle.

- I had a Phenom2 x3 720 with Vcore scale 0.85-1.425 (or 1.15 - 1.425 as cpu-world.com says, I dont know which is corrrect) and c&q goes it down to 1.1V when idle.

- And now I have a phenom2 x4 960T with a Vcore scale 0.825-1.4 and c&q goes it nowhere down... I always see it at 1.3V(via Everest). Is this normal or strange?

Is this Battlefield3 good for multi gaming? I use to play only MOHAA because I havent find any better game so far. What about cheaters? (Mohaa is full of cheaters) I mean, can we be sure that profile scores like these in your signature are real?

I'm not sure what your BIOS looks like, so I can't suggest anything. Hopefully someone more experienced can chime in.

Yes, it's very good for multiplayer. There will always be cheaters, but I've not seen a lot since I've started. On the few occasions when I have encountered cheaters, they have been promptly kicked off the Server's. You can normally tell if a person is cheating simply by looking at their inflated numbers (such as having an insanely large amount of kills and very few deaths - which is not the case with my numbers as they are virtually equal). I can't believe you've never heard of Battlefield 3.

did you reset the bios after installing the new chip? sometimes gremlins can remain from old chip settings!!!

and, as for monitoring software, no two are the same, and none of them are perfect (even mine)

Why do you switch off c&q? Is there any reason to work cpu in full voltage when you are idle?

Yes, I reseted bios to optimal defaults. The default Vcore voltage is 1.35 or 1.475 if turbo boost is enabled. I prefer to disable turbo boost in order to o/c.

If turbo boost is enabled then c&q works between 1.3-1.5V

I have a monster heasink(skythe mugen2) witch is fanless, 960T is only 95W.

But my point is not how much higher but how much lower... Why cant go below 1.3V as other cpu's use to go?

my rigs are never idle. they are for work. if they are not being used, i turn them off

i am trying to think of some layman's terms to help you understand...

a car's engine at idle, ticks over. it uses very little fuel... but still needs it.

to make the car accelerate, more fuel is needed, and this fuel is burnt at a faster rate than it does when it, the car, is idly ticking over.

more acceleration makes the engine get hotter. the faster you accelerate the hotter it gets.

the car needs to tick over at a certain rate to enable other functions of the car to operate (lights, air con, dashboard, alternator, etc)

'screwing' an engine can kill it

the same can be said for a CPU - without a minimum amount of volts it will fail to work

the faster the CPU is worked, the more volts it needs

the more volts go through it - the hotter it gets

etc...

I m afraid you havent understood me or you havent read the previous posts. We talk for lower voltage ONLY when c&q goes it down(this happens when u r idle).

As you see in the links, cpu's have a voltage scale, for 960T is 0.8-1.4V according to that site. If it goes 0.8 then why c&q cant drop it so or about so? Why cant go below 1.3 as happens in the rest of amd cpu's?...

It may be that you are using a much more powerful CPU now than you had been using before. Candq cant downclock your cpu to achieve stability with lower voltages, and your quad core most likely needs 1.3volts minimum to achieve stability even at idle, its a much faster CPU, and a much more power hungry CPU if i am not mistaken. The 960 is really a 6 core cpu with only 4 active cores. You could achieve lower volts if you under clocked the cpu to something below 3.0 ghz, but my guess is it needs 1.3 and so its using 1.3.

Of course i could be off base, it just doesnt really surprise me that your quad core at 3.0 ghz is requiring 1.3 volts idle.

Please someone correct me if im wrong!

CnQ can cause issues with OC's,i disable as a matter of course.

I need to know what board you have and does it officially support the zosma core?

I know my Sabertooth doesn't throttle back my 1090t and was putting 1.45v thru at stock clocks! Auto volts is a menace.....

BTW,the amount of energy you would save wouldnt make you a cup of tea.

just a thought as idk with not yet having played with a new fx chip. looking around they (all the new fx range) seem to be power hungry little chips and maybe not dropping as low at idle is a reason for part of this?

my bad, i was just reading about ocing an fx6core and kinda got confused

ooo 6 core cpu pretending to be a quad, have you tried unlocking it yet dude?
