Performance Laptop Suggestions?

Hi,

Im looking to purchase a laptop as i'll be moving around a lot more in the near future. The trouble is, I've always had a PC and am kind of lost in the laptop market.

What are the good laptops brands out there? MSI? Dell? Toshiba?

Im looking for a performance laptop with (minimum):

i7 processor

6gb ram

1TB hard drive

17" screen

Heavy duty graphics card

And I have about £1800 to spend. I speced out a Dell XPS 17, and it met all the above requirements and had windows 7 ultimate, office, 3 years warranty, 3 years accidental damage cover. I have bought previous PC's from dell and their aftercare is excellent, so im inclined to purchase a laptop from them also. Am i making a judgement error here?

I need the PC to run 3D modelling software like Solidworks and ABAQUS.

Ill make it easy for you.

dont touch MSI, Tochiba or DELL (except maybe alienware) with a 10' pole

go with ASUS all the way, epic product and customer support.

I have a G73-JW for about 1 year and a half no problems what so ever and its easy to transport (for a 17.3 inch laptop atleast)

they released there new G74 series with an updated "case" and components well made and priced.

I'm not sure what sites are good to buy them in the UK but in Canada i use newegg often.

good luck

Thanks for your input guys, I will have a look at ASUS laptops.

Have either of you had first hand experience with their aftercare? i.e. should the laptop malfunction, do they offer to replace components, troubleshoot etc? (like Dell does)

I don't really understand the bashing of Dell. They deliver thousands of PC's, laptops, projectors and so on with a very small percentage of it breaking. I'm not saying they're neccessarily the top-dogs in the laptop market, but they do have some solid products IMHO.

There might be something I'm missing though?

I'll have to agree with the points made about MSI and Toshiba. The quality of their products usually leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm generally not fond of Asus either. I had a GTX280 and a monitor from them and they both died shortly after the warranty expired. Bad luck perhaps, but it still left me a bit displeased.

So what's left? Well, even with my previous experience I'll still have to go with Asus.

Or a Sony Vaio F, but that's just because I'm a bitch to their design.

I would say the msi gaming range laptops are quite nice but thats just me

Awesome, thanks guys! You've given me some food for thought...

Alienware are a bit to pricey for me and i dont like the styling. And ive had a few mates who got vaio's and said they regretted it.. not sure why though

Looks like i'll do some more research tonight!

Thanks
