Pentium Anniversary Edition to Replace AMD Rig?

Well it's been a while since I have been on here!

So basically last night I was playing a little Metro Last Light and then my PC decided too throw a hissy fit and go pop on me. Shut itself down an smelt a tad burnt so pulled out my mobo and sure enough the thing was dead. Don't know how don't know why but then again this rig has been dying for a bit now so do need to build a new one.

So I have been hearing pretty good things about the new Pentium Anniversery edition chip for gaming, which is all I do, especially when you OC the nads off it which to be fair I intend to.

But the question is do I go with the Intel chip or do I get myself another AMD Chip?

I can spend around £75 on a new chip and about the same on a new board but not a penny more.

So what are your guys' thoughts on this?

Cheers people!!

Wouldnt skimp tbh - save for a little bit longer because youll want other new bits to go with it (as always)

Ive got the CPU and will be revieiwng it in the next week or so (saving time for you ;) )

Your pc's death may be caused by your power supply...

What PSU do you have? I wouldn't get any new hardware if your PSU is crappy/faulty

Sound as Guv, looking forward too it. I have been hearing its a little gem to overclock.

Am running an XFX Pro series 650watt. It's nothing to do with the PSU it was probably my motherboard was kind of cheap and crappy even at the time I bought it.

Well, if you go LGA 1150 now and the Pentium starts feeling a bit sluggish you'd have a good variety of upgrades available.

I would say the go for the AMD chip if the games you play can use the other cores. If not just go with the Pentium. Waiting for the review here so I can see if it's worth it for my first ever build :)

Tom, when you do your review of the G2358, can you focus also on overclocking with the H87 or the H81 chipset, some manufacturers are allowing you to overclock on these boards now, so could you show us the difference between overclocking on H81/H87 to Z87 or Z97? I assume people who are buying this CPU are not going to buy an expensive motherboard anyway..

Like this idea!

£75 for the CPU and £75 for the board gives you a budget of £150. I'm sure the Pentium is very good for the price etc but... do yourself a favour, take sadwiches to dinner for a few weeks and scrape together an extra £35.99 and get yourself twice the cache and twice the cores. You also get FMA and AVX extensions:

4670k for £140 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/i5-4670k-...Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item3ce3a6864f

Z87 mobo for £45.99 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Asus-Z87-...aptopMotherboards_CPUs_CA&hash=item43cae4f4f4

I wouldn't touch a refurbished out of the box mobo from ebay with a barge pole tbh.

Don't see the problem with refurb'd/used/out of box etc. stuff myself. It's advertised as fully working - pay by paypal and if it doesn't work properly when it comes you get your £ back.

It really depends on the product. RAM, SSDs, CPUs and other products with low failure rates are fine to be bought as used in my opinion. However products with higher failure rates like GPUs, HDDs, etc are better bought new.

I see what you mean... do mobo's go wrong a lot then?

I've been messing with computers for 20 odd years and haven't had a mobo fall over on me - at least not for hardware related reasons (have had some terrible BIOS's on KCS mobo's). In fact the only ones I've known to go wrong are the Dell mini-desktops because they had poor airflow and faulty caps that blow up!!

Anyways - back to the topic - I'm sure the Pentium Anniversary will be better than the AMD setup - but if you put a few more quid in and shop smart you can get significantly better still, and something that will last you longer before "upgradeitis" sets in. That's all I'm trying to say really :p

The AMD setup will be better in about 70% of all games unless if its a fx4xxx.
