PCI-E slots

Ok so I have an Asus CHIV Formula and I was wondering if I put a PCI-E x1 soundcard in the x16 slots will that reduce my GPU slot to 8x or hinder my potential crossfire abilities in future?

Don't hold me to it, but i think you'll be fine.

Just try it and look in cpuz to confirm that your speeds are still the same, I think it would be a different matter with an Intel setup.

The more I think about it, the more I think your speeds will remain unchanged.

even though PCI-E x1 will work in PCI-E x16 slots (backward-compatibility), installing any x1 card in a x16 slot, while your main GPU is running at x16, will be downgraded to x8.

just as installing two GPU in x16 slots, degrade to x8

(with the exception of gen3 mobos)

if your mobo has 4 slots (16, 8, 8, 16), and the GPU is in a x16 slot, placing a x1 in one of the x8 slots will not downgrade the x16 to a x8

From the manual:

My board has 3 x16 and 1 x4. And has the following configs: 16x 16x, 16x 8x 8x.

So I guess that it won't downclock my GPU then.
