Hi

so my pc has been running fine, until lately when a update was causing trouble shutting down. it took like 30+ minutes to shut down and it did it multiple times, then all of a sudden stopped. then everything ran fine until Friday night when it wouldn't shut down. it stood still at "shutting down" for like 1.5-2 hours before i manually shut it down - holding down the power button for a couple of secs. then it ran fine until Tuesday. Now it wont shut down, reboot sleep, or anything other than logging off. the computer works fine when it is on, no problems until i try shutting it down. nothing happens it just stays at the desktop, and i can open some things and some I cant.

can someone help me?

Sounds like a busted drive

it probably has been interrupted during an automatic update

if you have system restore enabled, reset your system back to a date prior to when the hiccups started.

failing this. it can be done manually

i have no restore points, stupid little me :S

how can i find out if its a program running? usually windows asks if it should force them to shut down, but nothing happens

Right-click on the task bar (or super bar as i think windows are calling it now), then click on start task manager:

On the 'processes' tab there will be a list of programs currently running on your computer, if windows shows you a message saying anything about force shut down, then i'm pretty sure you're having problems because of a program (or programs) are running in the background and they don't stop successfully and windows doesn't like shutting down when programs are still functional causing the whole system to just wait.

Try remember if you installed anything then this problem started happening or if you like post a screen shot of your task manager showing your processes and i could guide you to possibly close any unnecessary ones to see if it solves the issue.

i have had this kind of problem before aswell the only way i managed to sort it out is to reinstall windows

I have had this issue with a corrupt update.

Try start it and do another update or try running some sort of system scan, it sounds like a file its trying to read is corrupt and it simply can't read it so it is in a endless loop. It maybe a corrupt file or ther hard drive sector where the file is might be stuffed.
