PC GTX 780 ti to 4K TV

I'm building a new PC, but currently run my old PC through a Sony W4000 TV via HDMI. The PC I'm building will comprise of a MSI 780 ti Gaming Edition Card.

Now at some point this year I'll be getting a 4K TV and I'm wondering will I need to go with an SLI setup to achieve to 4K Resolution?

I also read that HDMI 2.0 although not out yet will be added to the TV's by way of a firmware update? Is it possible that graphics cards could get the same treatment?

I suppose I could just run the PC in a lower resolution but it seem a waste.

I must say though I'm not sure how I would connect up the PC and if my current 1.4 cables would be sufficent?

If anyone has dabbled with 4K gaming and has connected up to a TV rather than a monitor I'd love to know how and what your setup was?

Thanks alot and hope you can help??

I've seen that running a single 780ti is pushing the reaches of the card a little bit, so you would have to be playing on lower settings than I think you would want at 4k.

For 4k you want a 290x in Xfire at the minimum. I say use a 290x over a 780ti because it has better performance at that resloution.

for 4k you need display port 1.2 for the best experience.. beats HDMI

You should read this review of the latest Dell 4k monitor. It highlights the need for display port cables for 60hz as HDMI will only give 30hz, that RadeonHDx alluded to.

To put things in to perspective, think of it like this:

1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels

2560x1600 = 4,096,000 pixels

3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels

So 4k is akin to running four 1080p screens! To get any meaningful frame rate playing games you'll need at least two flagship cards. The heat and fan noise of the 290's would put me off AMD at the moment; relative if your pc is going in your living room next to that 4k screen.

I guess it's a new technology and therefore maybe wise to wait. I heard that no TV's have the displayport, maybe the second gen TV's will include it??

Thank you all so far for the pointers

I think it would be wise to wait, until the tech matures and there's some content out there. I'd recommend a 30" monitor or an Oculus Rift (dev kit $300) for your pc while waiting for 4k :)

don't bother with 4k. especially not with a TV.
the technology is still in a very early state and you'd have to dump an assload of money, doesn't matter if it's 290x in crossfire or 780ti in sli.

Would need 780 sli as a minimum and then enabling AA on the majority of games would be tricky but image quality would be pretty insane anyway so I doubt you'd ever need it. On my 2560x1600 panel the difference even with high AA to no AA is barely noticeable. Looked at a 2560x1440 panel? They're well priced...

Or if you wanted a premium product Panasonic have their first 4K TV which is HDMI 2.0 60Hz and also has displayport.

Edit: The Panasonic is £5,500 I think but there was one on CNET last week or the week before for £500. It's an Australian make but might be coming to the UK, it might be worth keeping your eye out, depends if your up for trying out a not as well known brand. I don't think it'll be HDMI 2.0 60Hz though.

I would buy a monitor but my setup will run with a HTPC which is in my lounge, so it's going to have to be a TV instead

If you are just watching movies you don't need a high end system. Could go with a i3 cpu and a 7770/650ti tbh.
All depends on what the system will be used for.
