Painting Fractal Arc Midi

Hi guys

I'm wanting to paint my Fractal Arc Midi case as part of my new project and was wondering what was the best method to do so as I have no previous case painting experience.

I understand that sanding the case down before priming is necessary, what grit of sandpaper should be used for this ?

Does it matter what colour of primer is used as I have come across both grey and white Plasti-Kote primers ?

hello Dandaman,
u will need a 800 grit sandpaper . no need to remove the old color , just give some grip for the primer to stick on. be aware of the edges while sanding cause it's pretty easy to take it up to the metal. if u do so it's not a disaster , u will just need etch-primer then.
if u r going to paint it with a bright color then go for a white primer . grey and black primer r for darker colors

the overall texture of the fractal coating is a "rough" texture. usually sanding the roughness will
make the texture throughout "splotchy" which will create high/low tone colors. so for eveness you
could go a couple of routes.
1. using a rough scotchbrite pad (RED), scuff the surfaces really well
2. carefully sand (not breaking the top coat)
3. sandblaster the surfaces

afterwards, wash, dry and prep surfaces for painting. as rusty advised bare-metal needs to have
a etching primer used to have a secure attaching surface for the paint to adhere to.

so it really depends on if you want a quick unreliable color or something that will last and look good
for a while.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am going to be painting it white as I don't want to go buy a new case when I like this one so much and of course I wan't a good finish that will last a long time

I won't be doing it for another couple of weeks yet but plan on getting the supplies in soon enough so wanted to know a little bit about it first.

Your not going to get a brilliant finish doing it DIY, it will be cheaper to take it to a local car body shop

You think ? I see no harm in asking them to do it. Just don't know if they will and if they do it could be a bit pricey and pointless then. No harm in enquiring though

i have had cases done for £30 in the past, ask around - find some numbers on yell, if one place arent willing to do it your bound to find someone else who will.

It's something I never actually thought about doing, cheers for that one.

No worries mate I shall be getting a project log started once I finally decide on what I'll be doing.
