p5b question??

i just installed speedfan on my pc to monitor the temps and have noticed my cpu temp jumping from 50 to 80c with nothing happening in the background to cause it. the system is at stock, i also installed pc probe to double check and it says the same thing. now if i reboot it sits there at 49-50c then after 30 mins it jumps to 80c

have any of you come across this problem before

i have a temprature thing coming so i can whop it under the heatsink just to make sure the temps are ok and i am hoping its an asus fault

My p5b reported higher temps than some other boards ive had, not as bad as that tho, is it the stock cooler your running?

no its a freezer pro, gonna get me a temp probe in there in a few days just to double check to see what it is

does seem rather high, take you have reseated it etc, i guess so when you put the probe in, what sort of temps are the mobo reading?

Temp does seem high - if the passive cooler is hot to the touch introduce a fan to the northbridge chipset cooler (i usually rest a 120mm fan on my graphics card to cool the ram and the chipset at eh same time .

It's been a while since I used my P5B but if I recall ASUS put those stupid covers over the heat sinks which don't help cooling much - the cover just peels off and you should immediately see an improvement in your temps - to allow the benefit of the fan you will need to remove the cover anyways.

I did this and it did help, and it doesnt effect the warranty despite what I thought would be classed as modifications

bit of an update

i put a probe on the centre of the cpu and reseated the heatsink temp on the probe shows a stock 930 at 31.5 idle and speedfan and pcprobe 2 show temps at 46c . once again how accurate are asus boards temp wise

sounds more or less about right-ish. The software readings are taken from a diode in the CPU- much closer to the main build-up of heat.
