P4 Upgrade Time!!

Ok guys, I finnally had it, trying to keep my old P4 system running and it's time for a motherboard/CPU/RAM upgrade.

This is what I am running now.

CPU - Pentium 4 945D overclocked to 4.255GHz

MB-Asus P5WD2 Premium

RAM- 4Gb of Kingston DDR2-833

GPU- Nvidia GTX 7800 OC

Sound card- creative X-Fi Titanium

Cooling-Corsair H-60 w/ a Black Ice GTS 240 rad

Storage-2 WD 74G Raptor drives in Raid 0

PSU-Antec TrueBlue 480w

Recent upgrades:

To play newer games, I replaced my GTX 7800 with a referance Nvidia 560Ti , which was at the limit of my PSU.

Since my old case wasn't the quietest with all 80mm fans, I upgraded it along with the power supply.

I started getting SMART errors from one of my Raptor drives , so I replaced them with an SSD

I got ahold of another 560Ti referance card, sitting new in the box waiting for a MB that will support SLI.

Leaving me with theese new parts to carry over:

GPU- 2-560Ti's for SLI

Case-Corsair 600T SE

PSU- Corsair HX-850

SSD- Intel 320 120G

I just placed my order for:

MB-Asus P9X79 Deluxe

CPU- Intel 3930K

RAM- Cruical Ballistix Elite 1866MHz 4x4Gb

Fan-Phanteks PH-F140TS_BK (for GPU cooling)

Heatsink-CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO(I have no spare heatsinks, fitts 775 and 2011)

Free Game!-Mass Effect 3(already have it but my buddy doesn't)

What do I do now?

What should I do to my old machine before I take it apart?

What should I do before I build up my new machine?

While switching over my rig I will be limited to my netbook.

There is nothing wrong with Crucial memory. I'd say they are right up there with the big guns, especially in the SSD market.

You need to backup everything that you want to carry over to your new build as you'll need to reinstall windows.

This may be troublesome if your limited to a netbook, it depends on how much you want to transfer, but you will more than likely need an extra HDD.

this. I assume the OP has another hard drive for storage? use that to put the importent files on ^^

Do you really need 16gb of ram? And as predator said that ram is massively overpriced, What are you getting a 212 evo, would the h60 not be better?

What psu have you upgraded to?

I hope you know that's a majorly overpowered processor for gaming? If you're not going to use this for some professional video/photo/... editing, rendering, ... then you're throwing away a lot of money!

Yea have to agree - you've kinda got this the wrong way around! You've got an awesome cpu and platform and some average gpus. Gaming systems work the other way around! Best to post on the forums before you buy.

Otherwise yea, you just need to back up the files you want to keep and make sure you have your copy of windows to hand.

All my stuff is backed up to my NAS drive. I'm not sure how to get the info back once I get the OS installed. Mostly not sure about all the game progress files and stuff like that, Data is all secure and backed up. I still have one good Raptor HDD if I just need to copy stuff over to untill I get windows reinstalled on the SSD. Not sure about the 128 bit AES encryption on the Intel drive will give me any troubles or not, do I need to erase the SSD on the old system first?

Overpriced coming from people who don't know what I paid for it(prices vary by area or country) or what I'm doing with it, mean nothing to me. It's my budget, let me worry about it, and this is the parts I have to live with , so part selection is also my problem. RAM is so dirt cheap the burden is on you to prove I don't need 16G of RAM. My GPUs are what I have right now, you don't need to game on them , I do and they are plenty enough for the games I have and play.

The 212 EVO like I said in my post is because I have no heatsinks laying around. The H-60 I have was before 2011 so it doesn't include the standoffs for 2011. If I can find someone with an H-100 to send me their unused 2011 standoffs I'm set, If not I have to track some down from Corsair, either way if I find the standoffs, and get the H-60 mounted to the new rig, I don't have a heatsink for the old system, the 212 EVO, is the cheapest solution that fits both 775 and 2011 so I won't be stuck without a cooler for either system when changing over and after.

PSU is listed in my first post Corsair Hx-850

I have also been pondering the Ship of Theseus paradox, and think the system needs a name.
