Na - the cpu just handles the game mechanics and rules like where you are shooting and the effects of the bullet. The gpus turn what the cpu says is happening into a slideshow - literally (defined as the fps). Changing the graphics settings or resolution doesn't change anything that the cpu has to calculate but it massively changes what the gpu has to do.

E.g.

If somebody gets shot and dies in BF3 then regardless of what graphics settings are being played the cpu just says that the guy is dead. The gpu has to turn that into a graphical representation - and the more pixels and the prettier the pixels the harder that is. The cpu isn't making pixels so no extra work.

Noooooooooo. Forget 2011 socket, that's for people who need the Hex Cores and hyperthreading, which he does not. Go for an i5 3570K and a Z77 board. And don't forget the PSU, you'll need one of those

If this is purely for gaming then I would say build something along the lines of what petrolhead said. BUT if he wants to spend that amount still there are things you can add that will actually make a big difference to your gaming experience. A 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 monitor is great to game on and a decent sound card and headphones also makes a huge difference. The other good thing here is the monitor, headphones, soundcard wont become obsolete in a few years like the rest of the rig so in the future when an upgrade is needed these parts can be carried over.

In response to your latest post the 3820 often gets lower fps than an i5 3570K, especially when overclocking is taken into account so it would be better to go for that.

A 3570k is ivybridge! The issue is i5 vs i7 and you just don't need i7 for gaming. Just tell us he wants to do a little bit of photoshop/video editing and we'll stop hassling you lol.

ah socket 2011 ivybridge isn't out for about 6 months (or maybe even quite a bit more) you mean sandy-bridge extreme lol! Don't worry all these architectures get confusing

Unless you get the hexacore the it's exactly the same performance as the 1155 i7 (3770k). 2011 socket isn't anymore useful. But if he did want a 2011 then the 3820 is the cpu to get.
