overclocking x79

okay so im a little confused, i have an asrock extreme 9 x79 with a 3930k

now coming from an AMD background and never having the Black edition CPU's im used to overclocking via FSB, and all these new terms really baffled me, i figured i would use the preset "4.6ghz" as it was close to the 4.5 i was aiming for, which upped the power levels slightly, and also put +0.2 on the offset volts, which was fine.. highs of 84c it was stable so i started dropping the offset volts..... im currently sat at +0.020 and its seeming stable as a rock.[all other offset volts were tested aswell, i didnt just knock off 0.18 ] (stable as in, running different games with prime in the background for 12ish hours as its my days off)

the "level" is set to level 3 medium, as well, thats what it set it too, i dont really understand that too well, shall i just keep dropping the offset volts? its currently at about 1.33v @75c max, am i missing something or is it really this simple

its a revision C2 cpu which i understand clocked well but, these volts are getting silly low

I am not used to the as rock software but all you really need to do is turn off turbo boost mode. Set the multiplier to 45 and set the cpu core voltage to 1.3v and test. If it fails then up the core voltage slightly by 0.05v until you get stable.

I usually test for an 45 mins and if it stable then I will lower the volts until unstable and bump it back up. Then I would do longer runs.

You may also want to set your power settings to high but really it is very easy.

I wouldnt go over 75C for a 24/7 clock and at that speed and volts that seems a little high. What cooler are you using?

To give you an example my 3930k is at 4.6ghz at 1.336 volts and runs at average 66C with the hottest core being 70C. That is with the fans on my H100 set to medium speed I could drop it by 2-3 more degrees by upping the fans but they are very loud.

cooler i am using is a H100I, considering replacing the paste (dont know why i used the default!) with SP120's

although today i have dropped back to stock due to system hangs[which still happen at stock], im thinking its my PSU that would be causing this? no bluescreens just freezes, the +3.3v line does look a tad low, its an OCZ z1000 80 plus gold[got it from a friend, its about 5 years old]

also need to add that once in sleep mode wil lsometimes turn itself back on, any kind of wakeup apart from power switch is turned off

to add, it survives memtest86, thinking of just saying balls to it and picking up an ax860i like i was going too in the first place, but obviously need to rule out this PSU to see if i should throw it away or sell it on (only if its not at fault)

the PSU wasn't the issue, i still get regular freezes, really not sure what it is, it will occasionally loose drives, i have switched drives over to the different chipsets disabling all others but they all seem to freeze eventually. RMA time?

my rampage iv extreme would lose my boot drive all the freaking time. so i downloaded all the latest firmware for the satas and put on the newest version of the bios that was available and havent had a problem since. keep at it dude. you will solve it

i have tried every driver on the asrock website (including the beta drivers) same with the bios, no dice... when trying to RMA the board to overclockers.co.uk they keep telling me its my ram (but its fine in another system? ) everything at stock atm

i have traced the problem and fixed it, disabling turbo has stopped all problems at stock speeds..... only problem is i cannot seem to find a way to disable it when overclocking unless im missing something stupidly obvious / it renames itself to something else?
