Overclocking question!

Hello Peeps!

From my last thread on The amd part of the forum, I have decided to up grade the ram and overclock the CPU!

I was told that my CPU could go fether than 2.691ghz

Really im scared and, well I don't want to blow the poor thing to bits but what is the safest voltage to get high clocks? :worship:

EDIT: My temps are 28 - 29oC Idle and 30 - 36oC load, Whats a safe temp as well...

if youre on decent water cooling then about 1.55-1.6v, your current clock is pretty good for an X2 so be sure that its actually your memory that is holding you back. also i would try several different temp monitors to ensure those temps aren't too low

Won't that like kill an AMD? How much would that cut the life? I will need this chip for another half a year.. Im not sure what a stock clock processor life is..

Im sure its loads seeing as I still have a working P1 Pro..

well mine was on 1.55 under water. 1.6 would be the max tbh. there are tons of monitors, their accuracy depends on your motherboard and drivers so its best to get a range of temps

ur temps seem low, but i would still stick to 1.55 volts max and just see how big of an OC u get with it

coretemp is really good, it takes the temperature from inside the CPU, the dye or somthing?

yea i dont think that is down to the app, just the location of the thermistor, most modern ones like conroe are on-die afaik. what make is your motherboard Toxcity?

I hav e read up on Core temp and it seems that it does read the DIE!?

Becasue AMD64 and core2duo have thermale thingys put in them...

ya coretemp is usually 1-2 degrees higher for me rather than everest, and speedfan. coretemp most accurate i thnk

I have just found the same thing..

2oC higher than Speedfan.

I can't seem to get 2.8ghz to run!

I get to super PI and it says: NOT CONVERGENT IN SQR05

I guess ill have to lower the speed.

1.55volts.. The max for the motherboard.

And temps are the same.

I guess the chip just won't run at those speeds.

well there is a fair bit of room between where you are now and 2.8

not really, i didnt notice anything, maybe 1 second faster loading times?

but superpi time shortened by 3 seconds

Got it to run 2.71Ghz its running fine and the memory is at 450mhz..

When i had my X2 3800+ the max i would go was 2.65. I had it at 1.57 volts with aircooling. (Thermaltake Copper Tower112 with 2 92mm Vantec Tornados max speed). I didnt get hot temps that i recall but i was always told never to go over 1.55 volts for some reason on an X2. I cant remmeber why though, i dont OC anymore hehe. Really, in real world performance increase youll see nothing between 2.6 and 2.8 i imagine.

Your not supposed to go over 1.55 on air, as its simply not a stable enough cooling technique. Under water i had my 3200 at 1.6v all the time, loaded at 36. Before my DFI decided to nail it to the floor. In totaly unrelated news i just ripped the IHS off it...

A 200mhz extra will give a small, but noticable boost in games, and maybe boot times.
