overclocking question on graphics card

well, i've recently taken up overclocking to make up for my cpu's shortcomings along with some of the graphics card's as well and for a while i was impressed (ran F.E.A.R. with a mix between medium and high detail and maxed out at 102 fps) but right after the last time i did i started getting the blue screen of death on F.E.A.R. and on doom3 the colors were mismatched, almost as if my rig was on an acid trip or something. did i just push it too far or what? if it helps here are the specs on the card:

nvidia GeForce 6200 PCI graphics card (256 mb)

core clock: 285 (stock) 375 (overclocked) 385 (overclocked again)

memory clock: 400 (stock) 825 (overclocked) 903 (overclocked again)

i did return the clocks to the previous overclocked setting but have yet to play any games on it yet untill i get word from more seasoned overclockers to see if that's the only thing i have to do. so if anyone could give a kind word on this affair i'd greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, it sounds like you pushed it just a bit too far, especially on the memory clock.

I have the 8800GT and if I push it too far, the screen starts to artifact in games/3DMark06, and will most likely cause the program to crash after about 30 secs.

Eitherway, it's not a good idea to push your hardware to those sort of limits. Sure, push to see what the limits are, then slacken off just a bit, to preserve some longevity from your hardware.

How's your temps on the card when it's overclocked?

well, the temps run between 38 and 40 degrees celsius. not too much of a jump considering it ran 32-34 on stock settings. i am going to try different clock speed settings though because i just tested it on halo and i'm getting pretty bad framerates compared to the score i set with F.E.A.R. on that i got an average of 34 fps with a max of around 85-90 on single player gameplay. on halo i'm averaging about 20-25 with 50 as a max. granted i didn't set everything to high on F.E.A.R. like i did with halo and i am running a step higher on resolution but it just doesn't add up in my mind. i would use multiplayer as a benchmark as well but apparently my connection isn't halo friendly as upposed to the smoothness F.E.A.R. has, shouldn't it be vice versa?

With a 6200, I`d be tempted to use the last drivers that allowed the coolbits.reg thingy to oc it. Newest recommended drivers from nVidia will stifle the card.

Tbh, personally I`d start from stock with the gpu clock and add 10/20 mhz and test. Soon as it effs, drop it 5 and try again. If it fails again go back down the full 10 or whatever.

Soon as that`s ok, I`d repeat with the memory. This be where the corruption will kick-in if u go to far.

As for pushing it too far... what are they £20 now ? I bought the pci one in Fryz for $18 last year for a stock test card.

guess i got ripped off because i forked over 105 (u.s.) for the freakin' thing. but thanks for the tip, i'll check out the coolbits thing and see if it works better
