Opteron vs FX

Guys,

Seen a few opterons in the classifieds recently quoted stable at around 3Ghz which seems mightly impressive for a £100 - £150 cpu. Hence was wondering what performance benefits an FX55/57 would have over one of these mighty little chips? Is it purely the flexibilty of the unlocked multiplier going up or maybe under phase they are not as good?

Dave,

I clocked my FX to the sames speca as DaGuy's 3ghz opteron and scored 200points more in aqm3 - hardly scientific (watercooled versus Phase and different ram) but there was a difference.

The unlocked multiplier and higher clocks allow you to use BH5 ram 1:1 which has proven to be most excellent in benchies and games - or if you are not lucky enough to have Ram capable of 275-300mhz you can still use it with the FX 1:1 and get maximum overclock.

Finally the Opty's under phase, more often than not have a cold bug meaning Phase cooling is not always possible.

I agree they are great value for money, although newer ones are not as good clockers as the first batch that came out - but you pays your money and takes your chance.

FX is guaranteed a certain level of performance with some batches being UBER clockers - like my wk13 FX55 that just found a new home at Boardy's ;)

Since they are both SD cores, if the same user was using em (so one install wasnt more optimised etc) it should score the same (given same fsb, timings etc)

HOWEVER - the FX will most probably scale higher, has the more flexible multi, and retains its value better

For most users, the Opteron is good enough, i think only benching will show a difference (3ghz vs 3.4ghz wont be much real life difference now will it ?)

Only if you like playing games at 1600x1200 with full eye candy and FEAR and other games based on that engine float your boat ;)

Yup I suppose it is always about extremes, if you want that little bit extra and it may only be a little, then you gotta pay for it. This is extreme prometeia after all and either it's the most extreme bang for your buck or the the most extreme overclock but always extreme - as for me I just feel extremely poor at the moment lol:p

I dont see the hinderence in having to use a divider with my Opto- the only drawback to really high clocks is the HTT the chip has to be capable of doing to get there. :)

:O The opteron is actually quicker, that does suprise me!!I see the opteron gains being able to use the hugher fsb.

No cold bug with Opteron, but vcore is 1.8V.... Fx57 0516 cold bugged @-92C(it froze).

IF you also look you will see the difference can be put down to the HTT speed of 270 versus 250 - is it unusual to find an opty that will do that kind of speed under extreme cooling?

Yeh def. The Opteron is running at a lower clock speed but has a higher FSB which always makes the difference - which is why dropping the multi is always a bonus with any chip :)

Heres my Opteron182 0528 with 166 divider(actually it is an Opty150 with multiplier hardcoded problem) vs. FX57 0516....
