could some one please advise me on which is the better stepping currently for the opty 170

CCBWE 0551VPMW ?

and how does this break down ?

Did you try google m8 thats how i found out my FX57 was a good clocker.

ive seen that stepping reach 2.6ghz easy and some have had 2.8ghz on about 1.5v on air. If you can get that stepping i would definately go for it. The CCBWE is the stepping and the 0551 means it was made on the 51st week of 2005.

I have one of these CCBWE stepping CPU's and it seems to be doing well so far - about to test it properly today

hmmm, mines not the opteron version though - just the straight X2.

on the topic of opterons: they are multiplier locked upwards right on s939?

I believe that they are, in the same way of the single core ones. I think it's just the FX's that get the honour of the fully unlocked multiplier, but they also get the price tag to go with it! 8)

Best to get someone with one to confirm...

All Opterons have upwards-locked multipliers- if they had unlocked multis, FX sales would drop to zero

I personally would pick X2 over Opteron for phase

im thinking an x2 might be best for me as im on phase too. The clocks from the opteron are very tempting but the risk of coldbug is higher than that of the x2.
