So tonight I pooled parts and rebuilt my black Alienware ready for sale. Very nice little machine
Any way, for a laugh I figured I would see how high I could clock the 9950 (125w TDP so far cooler than the 140w) and set about playing a little.
The mistake I made was that I forgot that the Asrock doesn't like a TDP over about 130w. This was why I could not get any more than 400mhz over on my 940.
Well I had sniffed the smell before but could not figure it out. I hit 3.2ghz easily with the Corsair H50 and decent temps. So I ran Prime. 45 mins in it was stable as a rock. But, I could smell like, warm electronics lol. So I start sniffing the air like an idiot and sticking my head inside the case.
"I wonder if it's the capacitors?". Put my finger down and my skin literally came off and stuck to the top
Thankfully I didn't cause any damage. But as I said I had sniffed that smell before. Oddly it was when I OCed the 940 to 3.6ghz and ram prime for a couple of hours. Thing was that was in the summer and I figured some one was having a bonfire or barbeque
