Hi, I am planning on upgrading my mobo, but I have OEM XP, now, I have another legit copy of OEM xp (Never Used). Can i do a repair install using the Brand New copy, over the old copy and not loose any files?

Will I have to wipe my HDD? Or can i back up my files on another partition of my Drive, and then copy them back across after the format?

Any advice on how to Back up my files to protect them from being wiped?

I have an OEM vers of XP that has seen at least 5 motherboard upgrades and it only asks you to reactivate the software as it has detected a hardware change. Depending on how old your current hardware is/what you are upgrading to and if you are staying with the same motherboard manufacturer you may be ok without having to format. However, I always like a fresh install to avoid driver issues. When backing up my C: drive on XP I use Acronis True image and have never had an issue.

Acronis True Image is an awesome piece of kit. Install XP, do 1 image copy immediately, and another after u`ve installed a bunch of stuff. Re-application of an image takes minutes.
